How to fix the Smart Hard Disk 1 (301) error on your HP computer

Man using HP computer with smart hard disk 1 (301) error

You turn on your HP laptop and see a black screen with the message: “Smart Hard Disk Error. The SMART hard disk check has detected an imminent failure.” It’s called the Smart Hard Disk 1 (301) error, and while it’s serious, it doesn’t always mean your drive is dead—sometimes there’s still hope.

At Asurion, we help people recover data, repair hardware, and diagnose failing drives every day. Here’s what to do if you see the Smart Hard Disk 1 (301) error on your HP computer.

What does the Smart Hard Disk 1 (301) error mean?

This warning means your HP’s built-in diagnostics found a problem with your hard drive. It could be a sign that your drive is about to fail, but it might also be a temporary glitch.

Common causes include:

  • A loose or damaged hard drive connection.
  • Bad sectors or corrupted data on the drive.
  • Physical wear, heat damage, or an impact.
  • Malware, failed updates, or file system errors.

If you see this error, you should back up your files immediately to avoid losing important data.

How to fix the Smart Hard Disk 1 (301) error

Step 1: Restart your computer

Sometimes, the error is temporary. Restart your PC and see if it boots normally. If you get the error again, continue with these steps.

Step 2: Back up your files

Don’t risk your data! Use an external hard drive or a cloud service to back up your data before you try fixes.

Step 3: Run HP Diagnostics

HP laptops come with a built-in tool to check your hardware.

  1. Turn off your computer.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Run the Hard Drive Test and follow the on-screen instructions.

If the test fails, your drive may need to be replaced.

Step 4: Check for loose connections

If you’re comfortable opening your laptop:

  1. Power off and unplug your device.
  2. Carefully remove the back panel.
  3. Gently disconnect and reconnect the hard drive.
  4. Replace the panel and turn your laptop on.

If you’re not sure how to do this, bring your device to your uBreakiFix® by Asurion for a free check.

Step 5: Run a disk check in Windows

If your laptop boots to Windows, run a built-in disk check.

  1. Open File Explorer and right-click your main drive (C:).
  2. Select Properties > Tools > Error checking > Check.
  3. Follow the prompts to scan and repair the drive.

Step 6: Replace your hard drive

If diagnostics and disk checks confirm a failing drive, it’s time for a replacement. You can swap in a new HDD or SSD and reinstall Windows.

If you need help with drive replacement or data recovery, our experts at uBreakiFix® by Asurion can help you get back up and running.
