How to set up your Amazon Echo Dot
💡 Need to know
- You need the Alexa app to set up Echo devices. Setup doesn’t happen on the speaker alone.
- Have your Wi-Fi password ready. Most setup issues are network-related.
- Orange light = setup mode. That’s your cue to open the Alexa app.
- Setup getting tricky? An Amazon expert can help at 866-853-4942.
The Amazon Echo Dot makes it easy to control your smart home devices with just your voice. You can use the Dot to make calls, play music, and even get answers to your questions from the internet.
Before you can reap all the benefits of your new Echo Dot, though, you need to set it up. Asurion is here to help. Our tech experts have worked with millions of customers on setting up and making the most of their devices.
Try these simple steps to set up your Echo Dot so you can start using it today.
Plug in your device and prepare for pairing
To get your Echo Dot ready for setup, start by placing it in the right spot and making sure it enters setup mode.
- Plug in your Echo Dot using the included power adapter, and place it where you plan to use it most, like the living room or kitchen. Make sure it is in an open spot where the microphone can hear voices clearly, not behind other items or inside a cabinet.
- Watch for an orange light, which means the Echo Dot is in setup mode. You may see a spinning blue light first, which just means the device is starting up, so wait 1 to 2 minutes to see if the orange light appears.
- If you still do not see the orange light, unplug the Echo Dot for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
- If the orange light still does not appear after that, briefly press the Action button, which looks like a circle or dot, and wait for Alexa to say, “Now in setup mode.”
Follow these instructions to configure the Alexa app
Once your Dot is plugged in and in setup mode, you’re ready to set up the device in the Alexa app with these steps:
- Open the Alexa app on your smartphone or other mobile device.
- Make sure you have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled on your device.
- Sign in to the app.
- Choose Devices.
- Press the “+” icon.
- Select Add Device > Amazon Echo > Echo Dot.
- Follow the in-app instructions to continue setting up your Echo Dot. You will select a language, decide whether to share your address, and connect your Echo Dot to Wi-Fi.
- Pick the room where you place your Dot.
Make sure you select the correct device and device generation during the setup process. Other options like Echo or Echo Pop may sound similar, but they’re not the same. Check the box your Echo Dot came in to confirm which generation it is.
Once you finish the basic setup, you can begin customizing the Echo Dot features. For example, connect the Dot to other smart home devices, link it to your music streaming services, or set up an alarm to wake you up in the morning. To connect to other phones or speakers, put your Echo Dot in pairing mode by saying “Alexa, pair Bluetooth.”
Troubleshoot common Echo Dot setup issues
If you can’t complete the Echo Dot setup on the first try, don’t worry. You can usually fix the issue and get the setup done with one of these methods.
- Toggle Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on and off: On your phone, toggle Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off. Wait a moment, then turn them back on to refresh the connection for Alexa connectivity troubleshooting.
- Restart the Alexa app: Close out of the app completely before opening it back up again.
- Unplug the Dot: Pull out the power adapter for at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in. Give the device a few minutes to power back on and hopefully enter setup mode on its own.
- Use the Action button: Press the Action button on the Echo Dot to enter setup mode after plugging in the device.
- Understand the Dot lights: A red light means Alexa is not listening, and a purple light means Do Not Disturb is on. You want to see an orange light to indicate setup mode.
As a last resort, you can reset your Alexa device and then try the setup process again.
