How to set up email on your iPhone

💡 Need to know
- Most major providers connect automatically. Google, Outlook, Yahoo, and others only require a sign-in.
- Have your password ready. You’ll need it—and possibly two-factor authentication.
- Manual setup works too. Even smaller email providers can be added with a few extra steps.
iPhones® come with a built-in mail app that brings all of your email messages into one inbox, even if you have accounts with multiple email providers. All you have to do is set up Mail on your iPhone.
At Asurion, our experts have helped millions of customers set up and troubleshoot their tech. Follow our guide on how to set up email on your iPhone.
Add an email account automatically
If you have an account with one of the following email providers, you can quickly sign in to add the email to your iPhone mail app with automatic setup:
- iCloud
- Microsoft Exchange
- Yahoo
- AOL
- Outlook
Follow these steps to set up your account in the app:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Go to Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts.
- Select Add Account.
- Choose your email provider from the list, such as Google or Outlook.
- A pop-up window should open and prompt you to sign in to your account. Enter your email address and password as prompted.
- If necessary, complete two-factor authentication to verify your identity.
- Tap Next if you see the option. Wait for Mail to verify your email account—it may take a moment.
- Select Save if you see the option.

If you have a less common email provider that’s not on the list in iPhone email settings, you can still use the Mail app. You just need to provide a bit more information:
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Go to Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts.
- Select Add Account.
- Enter your email address and select Next.
- Choose Add Other Account > Mail Account.
- Enter your full name, email address, password, and a description for the account, then select Next.
Mail should find your email settings and finish setting the account up for you. If Mail cannot find your account, you’ll have to enter more details and possibly contact your email provider for help.
Choose between the Mail app or third-party apps
You don’t need to use the Mail app to get your emails on your phone. Most email providers offer their own third-party apps you can use to access your inbox, organize your messages, and send emails.
So which should you choose?
Pros of the Mail app
Generally, Apple's Mail app is a good choice if simplicity and integration are your priorities. The Mail inboxes are user-friendly, and the app is already on your iPhone. Take advantage of that alongside the best hidden iPhone features, like voice controls and slide to text.
If you want to see your messages from multiple accounts with different email providers, Mail centralizes them. There’s no need to go back and forth between each provider’s app. There are also no ads on Apple Mail, while you may see inbox ads in other apps like Gmail.
For iCloud+ subscribers, you also get access to the Hide My Email feature. This feature generates random email addresses that forward to your real inbox, so you don’t have to share your actual address.
Pros of third-party apps
The upside of using third-party mail apps is that you can get instant alerts on new messages. Your emails don’t have to go through the added step of reaching Apple Mail, so you get the alerts faster. You may also find that third-party email apps offer more comprehensive features for categorizing and organizing your messages.
That said, in the latest iOS 18 Mail updates, there are some new useful features, like smart inbox categories and quick reply suggestions. There’s no right or wrong choice between the Mail app and your email provider’s own app. Choose whichever works better for you.
Fix problems if your email won’t set up correctly
If you can’t get your email set up in the Mail app, it probably comes down to one of these issues:
- Wrong password: You need the correct password to sign in to your account, so double-check you’re typing it exactly right. Reset the password through your email provider if necessary.
- Server connection issues: The email provider’s server may be temporarily down, or your phone may not be able to connect to it. Make sure you have a strong internet connection and are entering all the details correctly.
You may see a message that says “Account not verified” or “Cannot verify server identity.” Try restarting your phone and beginning the process again. Check with your email provider if the issue persists.
After setting up your email, you may notice that texts sometimes come from your email address instead of your phone number. Don’t worry, it’s an easy fix. It only takes a few clicks to stop your iPhone from sending texts from your email address in Settings under Messages.

FAQ
Why won’t my email add to my iPhone?
Most issues are caused by an incorrect password or two-factor authentication delay. Double-check your login details and internet connection.
How do I manually add an email account on iPhone?
Go to Settings > Mail > Mail Accounts > Add Account, then choose Other and enter your server details.
Why does my iPhone say “Cannot verify server identity”?
This usually means the mail server certificate can’t be confirmed. Restart your phone and check with your email provider if it continues.
Can I use Gmail or Outlook instead of Apple Mail?
Yes. Download the Gmail or Outlook app from the App Store if you prefer their features or notification system.
