💡 Need to know

  • PS5 supports two voice systems. Use Party Chat for PlayStation-only players or Discord for cross-platform.
  • Up to 16 players can join Party Chat. Perfect for full squads.
  • A headset sounds better than the controller mic. Clearer comms = fewer in-game disasters.

Debating strategy and joking with your squad is half the fun of multiplayer gaming. But you probably can't invite your friends over to your living room every time you switch on your PlayStation® 5. With voice chat, you can socialize with other players from anywhere.

Not sure how to start chatting? Asurion Experts love to game, and they know how frustrating it can be when you can't tell your teammates which way to go. If you're trying to figure out add friends on PlayStation 5 or set up Discord voice chat for gaming, they've got the answers you need. Here's how to set up voice chat on PS5™.

How to use PlayStation party chat

PS5's built-in party chat feature lets you talk with up to 16 players at once. You can use it to talk to your team in the same game without competitors eavesdropping on your conversation. Or have a voice chat while you play Fortnite, your buddy plays Hogwarts Legacy, and a third friend makes dinner with their headset on.

Follow these PS5 party chat setup steps:

  1. Press the PS button on your controller to access the control center.
  2. Click Game Base
  3. Open the Parties tab and click Start Party
  4. Choose between an open or closed party. An open party lets any friends of party members join the conversation, while a closed party is invite-only.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to start the party.

Creating a closed party gives you the most PS5 voice chat privacy, because random friends can't join your conversation. However, you'll need to invite your friends. Here's how:

  1. When you're inside the party, press the PS button to return to the control center.
  2. Click the voice chat card.
  3. Click Share Party Link.
  4. Use your smartphone to scan the QR code to get the invitation link.
  5. Send the link to anyone you want to invite.

How to use Discord on PS5

The PS5 party chat only works with other PlayStation consoles and the PlayStation App. Using Discord on PS5 lets you participate in cross-platform chats. For example, you could play Helldivers 2 on PS5 while your friend plays on their PC, and you can talk together on Discord.

Link your PlayStation Network account with your Discord account

  1. Open the control center by pressing the PS button.
  2. Click Game Base
  3. Select Discord > Link Account
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect your accounts.

Chat with friends using Discord on PS5

  1. In the control center, click Game Base
  2. Open the Discord tab and click Direct Voice Chats
  3. Pick the player or group you want to call.
  4. Click Start Voice Chat or Join

Transfer your call from the mobile app

  1. On your smartphone, swipe on the screen to open the voice options menu.
  2. Tap Join on PlayStation
  3. Pick your PS5 from the list of available devices.
  4. Tap Join Call on PlayStation

Switch from your desktop browser

  1. Click Transfer to console
  2. Click Transfer to PlayStation and pick your console from the list.
  3. Select Transfer Voice

Once you've joined a voice chat on Discord, you can communicate with other members through your DualSense microphone or an attached headset. The audio often sounds clearer on a headset, because the microphone is closer to your mouth. Consider upgrading if your friends' voices sound fuzzy or cut out during a critical in-game battle.

Adjust your microphone and privacy settings

You might find it distracting to hear loud shouting in your ear while playing online on your PS5. Here's how to tweak the PS5 microphone settings:

  1. Press the PS button to open the control center.
  2. Click Mic
  3. Select Adjust Microphone Level to turn the volume up or down.
  4. If you'd prefer to always start conversations on mute, click Microphone Status When Logged In and switch it to Mute

You can also adjust the balance between gameplay sounds and the volume of the chat:

  1. Open the control center.
  2. Click Sound > Volume
  3. Use the slider bars to adjust the volume from your headphones and controller speaker.

The Party Chat settings also make it easy to control who can contact you. Use these simple steps to tweak them:

  1. Open Settings and click Users and Accounts
  2. Click Privacy > View and Customize Your Privacy Settings
  3. Click Personal Info | Messaging to decide who can contact you.
