Simple steps to add friends on PS5

Man adding friends PlayStation 5

Gaming is always better with friends, and your PlayStation® 5 makes it easy to connect. Whether you want to team up for co-op missions, challenge each other in online matches, or just see what your friends are playing, adding them to your PS5™ friends list lets you share the fun.

Not sure how to do it? Don’t worry—Asurion Experts have you covered. Many of them are gamers themselves, so they know the ins and outs of the PS5 and can help answer any questions you have, from increasing storage to setting up parental controls. Follow these simple steps to start building your PlayStation network.

Adding friends on PlayStation 5

Adding online friends on PlayStation 5 is easy enough. There are several ways to do it, so pick the methods that work for you.

Add friends directly on your PS5 console

  1. Press the PS button on your PS5 controller to open the Control Center.
  2. Select Game Base, which is shown by the smiley face icon.
  3. Go to the Friends tab.
  4. Click on Search and enter your friend’s Online ID, which is their PlayStation Network username.
  5. Select their profile and choose Add Friend.

Add friends online using the PlayStation app

  1. Open the app and sign into your PlayStation Network account.
  2. Tap the Game Base icon at the bottom of your screen.
  3. Go to the Friends tab.
  4. Tap the Add Friend icon, represented by a person with a plus sign.
  5. Enter your friend’s Online ID and tap Add Friend.

How to share your gamer tag to add friends

To allow others to add you as a friend, you need to give them your Gamer Tag or Online ID. You can find it in the Settings menu:

  • Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Profile > Online ID.

Once you have your ID, you can easily share it through messages, social media, and email.

How to add friends from multiplayer games

Are you trying to figure out how to add PlayStation friends on GTA V? Most multiplayer games have built-in social features that make it easy to add new friends you’ve recently played with. To find them, locate the social menu within the game. This may be titled Friends List, Social Hub, Recent Players, or something similar.

In this menu, you can find people you’ve played with from leaderboard results, or some games may have a dedicated list of people you’ve recently played with. Once you’ve located them, simply send a friend request through the Add Friend option.

Accepting friend requests

If you’ve received a request to be friends, accepting it is easy:

  1. Open the Control Center by pressing the PS button on your controller.
  2. Select the smiling face icon to go to your Game Base.
  3. Find the friend requests tabs, which will have a notification icon if you have any pending friend requests.
  4. Once you’re on this list, accept any requests you want by clicking Accept.

If you’re having trouble accepting friend requests or navigating Game Base, try these troubleshooting tips for your new PS5 to quickly get back to gaming with friends.

Viewing your PS5 friend list

Whether you want to check who's online, start a party, or send an invite, here’s how to access your friend list:

  1. Go to Game Base by pressing the PS button.
  2. Select the Friends tab.
  3. Once you’re on the Friends tab, you can view your contacts' availability status and which games they’re currently playing.

Creating game parties

  1. Go to Game Base by pressing the PS button.
  2. Select the Parties tab in Game Base.
  3. Select Start Party. You have two options for the Party Type:
    • Open Party: Anyone in your friends list can join.
    • Closed Party: Only people you invite can join.
  4. Select the friends you want to invite to your party.

Note that the maximum party size on the PS5 is 16 players. Once you have created your party, you can control who can hear and speak to others within the party. Use the game voice chat option in the Control Center.

Understanding privacy settings

The PS5 privacy settings allow you to control who can see and interact with your account. From the homepage, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. From here, you can control who can see your real name, friends list, and online status, and who can send you friend requests.

How to remove PS5 friends from your list

  1. Go to Game Base by pressing the PS button.
  2. Select the Friends tab.
  3. Find the person you want to block in your friends list.
  4. Select their profile and press the Options button on your controller.
  5. Choose Remove from Friends from the menu that appears.
