How to set up Xbox Series X with a VPN

You want faster speeds, less lag, and access to content outside your region—but your Xbox Series X™ doesn’t support VPN apps. So, what now?

At Asurion, we help people get the most from their tech—from boosting network privacy to improving gaming setups. Here’s how to connect your Xbox Series X to a VPN, and why it might be worth it.

Why use a VPN on Xbox?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) can help:

  • Reduce lag or improve connection stability.
  • Protect your personal data on shared networks.
  • Access region-locked content like betas or early releases.
  • Avoid bandwidth throttling from your internet provider.

Even though Xbox doesn’t have a built-in VPN option, you can still connect it using one of the methods below.

How to set up a VPN using a PC

If your VPN is installed on your Windows® computer, you can share that connection with your Xbox.

  1. Connect your PC to the internet and launch your VPN.
  2. Plug an Ethernet cable from your PC to your Xbox.
  3. On your PC, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile hotspot.
  4. Turn on Share my internet connection.
  5. Under Related settings, choose Change adapter options.
  6. Right-click your VPN connection and select Properties.
  7. Under the Sharing tab, check Allow other network users to connect.
  8. Choose your Ethernet connection from the dropdown and select OK.
  9. On your Xbox, go to Settings > General > Network settings, then select Test network connection to confirm it’s working.

How to set up a VPN through your router

Using a VPN-enabled router protects every device on your network—including your Xbox.

  1. Log into your router’s admin panel (check your router label or manual).
  2. Look for VPN settings (your router must support this feature).
  3. Enter your VPN details from your provider.
  4. Save the changes and restart the router.
  5. Connect your Xbox to the network through Settings > General > Network settings > Set up wireless network.

Check your VPN provider’s setup guide for exact router instructions.

Use a Smart DNS as an alternative

Some VPN services offer Smart DNS settings to help unblock content without full encryption or speed loss.

  1. Log into your VPN account on their website.
  2. Register your IP address and activate Smart DNS.
  3. On your Xbox, go to Settings > General > Network settings > Advanced settings > DNS settings.
  4. Change from Automatic to Manual, then enter the DNS addresses from your VPN provider.

This won’t encrypt your traffic, but it can help with accessing region-locked apps and games.

Is it legal to use a VPN on Xbox?

Yes, VPNs are legal in most countries, but always check the terms of service for the games or apps you’re using.

Will a VPN make my Xbox connection slower?

It can—depending on the server location and your internet speed. Some VPNs offer fast gaming-optimized servers to reduce lag.

Can I use a free VPN with Xbox?

It’s possible, but many free VPNs have slower speeds, limited servers, and don’t support router setups. A paid plan is often more reliable for gaming.
