How to recover an HP laptop after a failed BIOS update

⚡ Fast fix

  • Give the update time. A BIOS update may restart your laptop several times. Don't interrupt it while it's still running.
  • Try a power reset. If the laptop is completely unresponsive, disconnect accessories and restart it.
  • Use HP BIOS recovery. On supported models, Windows + B can help restore a damaged BIOS.
  • Still won't boot? Stop by a nearby

for a quick diagnostic from one of our laptop repair experts.

Updating your HP® laptop's BIOS isn't exactly an everyday task. So when the update fails and you're left staring at a black screen, blinking Caps Lock light, or a computer that won't start, it's understandable to wonder whether you've made things worse.

At Asurion, we've helped troubleshoot plenty of laptops that refuse to boot after a firmware update. The first thing we'd want to know is whether the update is actually stuck or the BIOS has become corrupted. That distinction matters, because interrupting an update that's still running can cause more trouble. Here's how we'd approach recovery without putting your laptop through unnecessary resets.

What happens when an HP BIOS update fails?

The BIOS is firmware that helps your HP laptop initialize its hardware before Windows starts. If an update fails or gets interrupted, the laptop may have trouble completing those startup checks.

A failed HP BIOS update can cause:

  • A black screen when turning on the laptop
  • A blinking Caps Lock or Num Lock light
  • An HP BIOS recovery or corruption message
  • A laptop that powers on but won't load Windows
  • Repeated restarts or a startup loop

Not every black screen means the BIOS is damaged, though. If the laptop is still showing update progress or restarting during installation, we'd leave it plugged in and give the process time to finish.

How to recover an HP laptop after a failed BIOS update

BIOS recovery works differently from a normal Windows reset. We'd start with the least disruptive checks and use HP's recovery tools only when the laptop shows signs of a firmware problem.

1. Make sure the BIOS update has actually stopped

If your laptop is displaying a BIOS update screen, progress bar, or messages about installing firmware, don't shut it down. Keep the laptop connected to AC power and wait for the update to complete. Some HP models restart several times during the process.

If the screen stays black for an extended period with no apparent activity, or the laptop repeatedly fails to start after the update, move on to the next check.

2. Disconnect accessories and try a power reset

A temporary startup problem can sometimes look like a failed BIOS update. Before attempting firmware recovery, we'd remove anything that might interfere with startup.

  1. Disconnect USB drives, docks, external monitors, and other accessories.
  2. If the laptop is unresponsive and no update is running, hold the power button until it turns off.
  3. Disconnect the AC adapter.
  4. Hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the charger and turn the laptop on.

This won't erase your personal files. If Windows starts normally, we'd stop here rather than attempt another BIOS update immediately.

3. Try HP BIOS recovery using Windows + B

Some HP laptops include an emergency BIOS recovery feature that can restore firmware from a recovery copy. Here's how we'd try it on a supported model:

  1. Turn off the laptop and connect it to AC power.
  2. Press and hold the Windows and B keys together.
  3. While holding those keys, press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds, then release the power button.
  4. Keep holding Windows + B until the HP BIOS Update or recovery screen appears, then release the keys.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions and allow the recovery process to finish.

The screen may stay black briefly, and you may hear beeping or see the power light flashing.

If Windows + B doesn't work, some HP models use Windows + V instead. We'd check HP's instructions for the exact laptop model before repeating recovery attempts.

Not every HP laptop supports keyboard-based BIOS recovery, and the method may differ on business models.

4. Use an HP BIOS recovery USB if needed

If the built-in recovery doesn't work, a BIOS recovery USB may help on supported HP laptops. You'll need another working Windows computer, a USB flash drive, and the correct BIOS recovery package for your HP model.

  1. On the working computer, visit HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  2. Search for the affected laptop using its exact product number.
  3. Download the BIOS update package for that model.
  4. Run the package and choose Create Recovery USB flash drive, if that option is available.
  5. Insert the recovery USB into the affected laptop.
  6. Follow HP's model-specific instructions to start BIOS recovery.

Don't use a BIOS file meant for a different HP model. Installing incompatible firmware can make the startup problem worse.

Some newer HP systems use different recovery tools or don't support USB BIOS recovery, so we'd confirm the model's recovery options before proceeding.

5. Check whether Windows starts after recovery

If the BIOS recovery completes, the laptop should restart and attempt to load Windows.

  • If Windows starts, back up important files and check whether the system is stable before making additional changes.
  • If the HP logo appears but Windows won't load, the BIOS may be working again and the remaining problem could be with Windows startup. At that point, Windows Recovery or Startup Repair may be more appropriate than repeating the BIOS recovery process.

Avoid clearing the TPM or changing Secure Boot settings without a specific reason. Those changes can trigger BitLocker recovery, and you may need your 48-digit recovery key to unlock the drive. Learn more about BitLocker recovery key and where to find it.

What if your HP laptop has HP Sure Start?

Some HP business laptops include HP Sure Start, a security feature that can automatically restore damaged BIOS firmware from a protected backup.

These models don't support the standard Windows + B or USB BIOS recovery methods described above. If your laptop has HP Sure Start, allow its automatic recovery process to finish.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

Can a failed BIOS update be fixed on an HP laptop?

Sometimes. Supported HP laptops can recover a damaged BIOS automatically, through the Windows + B recovery shortcut, or with a compatible BIOS recovery USB. The available methods depend on the model.

Will HP BIOS recovery delete my files?

BIOS recovery normally restores firmware rather than erasing personal files. However, changes to firmware or security settings may trigger BitLocker recovery, so it's important to have your recovery key available.

What does Windows + B do on an HP laptop?

On supported HP laptops, holding Windows + B while briefly pressing the power button can launch HP's BIOS recovery tool. It won't work on every model, including those with HP Sure Start.

Why is my HP laptop screen black after a BIOS update?

The update may still be running, the BIOS may have become corrupted, or the laptop may be failing its startup checks. Give any active update time to finish before attempting recovery.

What if my HP laptop won't start after BIOS recovery?

If the HP logo appears but Windows won't load, the remaining issue may involve Windows startup. If the laptop stays completely unresponsive or continues showing firmware errors, we'd recommend professional diagnosis.
