What to do when your HP laptop shows Boot Device Not Found (3F0)
Your laptop can't find Windows. That's a pretty important thing to misplace.
💡 Need to know
- Your laptop can't find Windows. Error 3F0 means your HP laptop can't locate a bootable operating system.
- It might be a startup issue. Incorrect BIOS settings or damaged Windows files can trigger the error.
- Check your storage drive. HP Hardware Diagnostics can help identify a failing SSD or hard drive.
- Protect your files first. Don't reinstall Windows until you've ruled out drive failure and considered your backup options.
You turn on your HP® laptop, expecting Windows to load, and instead get a black screen that says "Boot Device Not Found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk. Hard Disk (3F0)." Well, that's reassuring.
At Asurion, we've seen this error show up when a laptop loses track of its storage drive, Windows startup files become damaged, or the drive itself starts failing. The important thing is figuring out which one you're dealing with before trying fixes that could put your files at risk. Here's where we'd start.
What does Boot Device Not Found (3F0) mean on an HP laptop?
The HP Boot Device Not Found (3F0) error means your laptop can't find a drive or operating system it can start from. That doesn't automatically mean your SSD or hard drive is dead.
Sometimes the problem is a BIOS setting or damaged Windows startup files. Other times, the storage drive has failed or isn't being detected.
One clue worth remembering: if your laptop was working normally yesterday and suddenly shows 3F0, we'd check the drive's health before attempting to reinstall Windows.
How to fix Boot Device Not Found (3F0) on an HP laptop
Start with the checks that won't erase anything. HP's built-in startup tools can help narrow down the problem even when Windows won't load.
1. Disconnect USB drives and restart
Remove flash drives, external hard drives, memory cards, and other nonessential accessories. Then restart your HP laptop. If Windows loads normally, an external device may have been interfering with startup. If the 3F0 error returns, keep going.
2. Restore the default BIOS settings
Your laptop's BIOS controls how the computer finds its startup drive. If those settings changed, restoring the defaults may help.
- Turn off the laptop and wait five seconds.
- Turn it on and immediately press F10 repeatedly to open BIOS Setup.
- Press F9 to load the default BIOS settings.
- Press F10 to save and exit.
- Confirm the changes and let the laptop restart.
If F10 doesn't open BIOS, restart and tap Esc repeatedly to open the HP Startup Menu, then select F10.
Restoring BIOS defaults doesn't erase personal files, but it can change startup and security settings. If the laptop uses BitLocker encryption, make sure you have access to its recovery key before proceeding.
Avoid manually changing Secure Boot, storage-controller modes, or other unfamiliar settings. For more guidance, see our HP BIOS startup and navigation guide.
3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics to check the drive
This is one of the most useful checks for an HP 3F0 error. If the SSD or hard drive is failing, repeatedly restarting Windows won't repair it.
- Turn off the laptop.
- Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
- Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Select Symptom Tests > Hard disk/SSD drive issue, if available.
- Run the drive test and review the results.
Some versions of HP Diagnostics list storage tests under Component Tests instead.
- If the drive passes the quick test but the error continues, an extensive test may help identify additional problems.
- If a test fails, write down the 24-digit failure ID. We'd stop there rather than repeatedly testing a drive that may be failing, especially if important files aren't backed up.
- If the drive isn't detected at all, that could point to a failed drive, a connection problem, or another hardware issue. A reinstall won't fix a drive the laptop can't access.
Our guide to running HP Hardware Diagnostics explains the available tests in more detail.
4. Try Windows Startup Repair if the drive passes
If the storage drive passes diagnostics but Windows still won't load, the problem may involve damaged startup files. Windows Startup Repair can sometimes fix these problems without deleting personal files.
- Restart the laptop and press F11 repeatedly to open Windows Recovery, if available.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Follow the prompts and let Windows check for startup problems.
If F11 doesn't work, you may need a Windows recovery USB created on another computer.
Windows may ask for your BitLocker recovery key before allowing repairs. If Startup Repair can't find a Windows installation, we'd investigate further rather than keep repeating the same repair.
5. Consider reinstalling Windows only after checking the drive
If the drive is healthy but Windows remains unbootable, reinstalling the operating system may be necessary. HP offers recovery tools for supported laptops, and Windows can also be reinstalled using Microsoft recovery media.
But we'd save this for last. Reinstalling Windows can erase personal files, apps, and settings, depending on the recovery method.
If your files aren't backed up, get help exploring data recovery options before continuing. And if the storage drive has failed, it may need replacing before Windows can be installed again.

FAQ
What causes Boot Device Not Found (3F0) on an HP laptop?
The error appears when your laptop can't locate a bootable operating system. Common causes include incorrect BIOS settings, damaged Windows startup files, or a failing SSD or hard drive.
Does Boot Device Not Found mean my hard drive is broken?
Not always. The drive may be healthy, but Windows startup files or BIOS settings could be preventing the laptop from starting. HP Hardware Diagnostics can help narrow down the cause.
Will resetting BIOS fix the HP 3F0 error?
It can, especially if incorrect startup settings are responsible. But restoring BIOS defaults won't repair a failed storage drive or damaged Windows installation.
Can I fix Boot Device Not Found without losing my files?
Often, yes. Checking connections, restoring BIOS defaults, running diagnostics, and using Startup Repair generally don't erase personal files. Reinstalling Windows is more disruptive and should come later.
What if my HP laptop doesn't detect its SSD?
If the drive isn't detected in BIOS or HP Hardware Diagnostics, the problem may be hardware-related. We'd recommend an inspection before attempting to reinstall Windows or replace the drive.
