How to get Bluetooth working again on your HP laptop
⚡ Fast fix
- Turn Bluetooth off and on. A quick refresh may clear a temporary connection glitch.
- Check your headphones or mouse. Make sure the device is charged and in pairing mode.
- Remove and reconnect the device. A fresh pairing can fix a stubborn Bluetooth connection.
- Restart your HP laptop. If Bluetooth still isn't working, reboot before changing drivers or settings.
You sit down with your HP® laptop, ready to connect your wireless headphones, mouse, or keyboard. Except Bluetooth has apparently decided those devices don't exist. Very helpful.
At Asurion, we've helped troubleshoot plenty of wireless connection problems, and we know there's a difference between Bluetooth disappearing from Windows entirely and one stubborn accessory refusing to pair. Here's how we'd figure out what's going wrong and get everything talking again.
1. Turn Bluetooth off and back on
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth off. Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
If the switch is missing, skip ahead to the driver checks. Windows may not be detecting the Bluetooth adapter.
2. Make sure the Bluetooth device is ready to pair
A headset or mouse that's already connected to another phone or computer may not appear when your HP laptop searches for it.
Disconnect the accessory from other devices, check its battery, and put it into pairing mode using the manufacturer's instructions. Then:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Add device > Bluetooth.
- Choose your accessory from the list and follow the prompts.
If it doesn't appear, move it closer to the laptop and try again.

3. Remove the device and reconnect it
If your HP laptop recognizes the accessory but won't connect, the saved pairing may be the problem.
Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, find the accessory, and select Remove device from its More options menu. Then select Add device > Bluetooth to pair it again.
4. Restart your HP laptop
Sometimes Windows just needs a fresh start. Restart your laptop through Start > Power > Restart, then try Bluetooth again.
If you're using a USB Bluetooth adapter, unplug it before restarting and reconnect it once Windows loads.
5. Check Bluetooth drivers in Device Manager
If Bluetooth keeps disconnecting or the option has disappeared from Windows, we'd check whether the adapter is working properly.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth.
- Right-click the Bluetooth adapter and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart the laptop if prompted.
If the adapter shows a warning icon, open Properties to check the error message.
You can also use HP Support Assistant or HP's official support site to find Bluetooth drivers for your specific laptop model. Avoid downloading drivers from unfamiliar third-party websites.
6. Run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter
Windows 11 includes Bluetooth troubleshooting through the Get Help app.
Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run next to Bluetooth, if available. Follow the prompts in Get Help.
This can help identify common adapter and connection problems without resetting your laptop.
7. Check for Windows updates
If Bluetooth stopped working after a Windows update or keeps disconnecting, check whether another update is available. Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install any available updates, and restart.
If the problem began immediately after a Bluetooth driver update, rolling back that specific driver in Device Manager may be more useful than installing another version.
What if Bluetooth is missing from your HP laptop?
If there's no Bluetooth switch in Settings and no Bluetooth category in Device Manager, Windows may not be detecting the wireless adapter.
First, check whether your HP laptop model supports built-in Bluetooth. Some older or specialized configurations may require a USB Bluetooth adapter.
If Bluetooth previously worked but has disappeared, check Device Manager under View > Show hidden devices. A hidden adapter may indicate a driver or detection problem, though seeing it there doesn't mean the hardware is currently connected.
