How to tell when your HP laptop charging port needs repair

⚡ Fast fix

  • Try another compatible charger first. A worn cable or connector can look a lot like a bad charging port.
  • Check for debris. Dust or lint can keep the charger from making a solid connection.
  • Only charges at an angle? Stop wiggling the cable—repeated pressure can make port damage worse.
  • Heat, sparks, or a burning smell? Unplug the laptop and stop using the port until it’s checked—the techs at the nearest

    can help.

You plug in your HP® laptop and nothing happens, so you unplug it, turn the connector around, push it back in, and eventually discover the angle that makes it charge. It works for now—but having to negotiate with the charging cable every time is usually a sign something needs attention.

At Asurion, our experts repair charging problems every day, and the port isn’t always the part to blame. Here’s how we’d rule out the charger and other easy fixes, spot the signs of actual port damage, and know when it’s time for a repair.

Rule out the charger before blaming the port

A damaged charging cable can create many of the same symptoms as a failing port. If you have another compatible HP charger with the correct wattage and connector, plug it in and see whether the connection improves.

Take a look at the original charger too. Fraying, bent connectors, damaged pins, or a plug that feels loose can all interrupt charging.

If another charger fits securely and works normally, you've probably saved yourself a charging-port repair.

Check the port without poking around inside it

Shut down the laptop and disconnect the charger, then use a flashlight to look inside the port. Dust or lint can keep a connector from seating fully, but bent pins, corrosion, cracks, or visible movement inside the port are more concerning.

Don't reach in with a metal tool or try to bend anything back into place. If loose debris is clearly accessible, gentle cleaning may help; damaged internal components need a different kind of attention.

Pay attention to how the charger behaves

A healthy charging connection shouldn't require a ritual. These symptoms make us more suspicious of the port itself:

  • The charger only works when held at a particular angle.
  • Charging repeatedly starts and stops when the connector moves.
  • The plug feels unusually loose inside the laptop.
  • The charging port moves or shifts inside the casing.
  • The laptop stops recognizing multiple known-good chargers.
  • The connector or area around the port becomes unusually hot.

One flaky charger is worth replacing or testing. Several compatible chargers behaving the same way on one laptop points much more strongly toward the laptop.

Stop using the port if you see heat, sparks, or damage

There's a difference between an annoying charging connection and one that isn't safe to keep testing.

Unplug the charger if you notice sparks, a burning smell, melted or discolored plastic, unusual heat around the connector, or obvious damage inside the port. Don't keep repositioning the cable to squeeze out one more charge.

An unstable electrical connection can cause additional damage beyond the charging port, which can turn a smaller repair into a more expensive one.

What does charging port repair involve?

That depends on the HP laptop.

On some models, the charging jack is a separate component that can be replaced. On others, the port may be attached to another board or soldered into the laptop, making the repair more involved. Damage to the surrounding casing or motherboard can change what's required too.

That's why we'd diagnose the problem before ordering a replacement port based on symptoms alone. The charger, battery, power circuitry, and port can sometimes produce similar charging problems.

Back up your laptop before the port fails completely

If the laptop still charges intermittently, use that opportunity wisely. Back up important files while you can still power the computer normally rather than waiting until the battery reaches 0% and the port refuses to cooperate at all.

Avoid constantly wiggling or putting sideways pressure on the connector in the meantime. Finding the magic charging angle may buy a little time, but it can also put more stress on an already damaged connection.

When we'd have the charging port repaired

If you've tested a compatible charger, checked for simple debris, and the connection still cuts in and out—or the port itself feels loose or damaged—we'd have it inspected.

The same goes for a laptop that only charges at an angle. That's not really a workaround; it's a warning sign.

If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.

FAQ

Why does my HP laptop only charge when the cord is at an angle?

The charger connector or charging port may be worn or damaged. Test another compatible charger first; if that behaves the same way, the port deserves a closer look.

How can I tell if the charging port or charger is broken?

Try a known-good compatible charger. If one charger fails but another works normally, the charger is the likely culprit. If multiple chargers have the same problem, the laptop may need repair.

Can I keep using a loose laptop charging port?

It's better to get it checked before the connection gets worse. Stop using it immediately if you notice excessive heat, sparks, a burning smell, or visible damage.

Can an HP laptop charging port be replaced?

Often, yes, but the repair varies by model. Some charging ports are separate replaceable parts, while others are integrated into a board or require more involved repair.
