Listen to the noise
A smooth rush of air that gets louder during gaming, video editing, updates, or other demanding work—that's usually just the fan doing its job.
Rattling, clicking, grinding, scraping, or loud fan noise that continues while the laptop is sitting idle—that's another story. That behavior deserves a closer look—it could point to debris, wear, or another cooling issue.
Check whether Windows is keeping the fan busy
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and open Task Manager. Sort the CPU column from highest to lowest. Do the same with GPU if the laptop has graphics-heavy programs running. If a game, browser, video app, update, or another program is using a large share of the processor, the fan has a reason to be loud.
Close programs you don’t need and wait a few minutes. If the fan quiets down with the workload, that tells you the cooling system was reacting normally.

Give the vents more airflow
Set the HP laptop on a hard desk or table instead of a bed, couch, blanket, or lap. Then, inspect the vents. If dust is visible, power the laptop off, unplug it, and use short bursts of canned air to clear the outside openings.
Dust restricts airflow, so the fan has to spin faster to move the same amount of air.
Turn down the performance mode
If the fan is loud even during ordinary work, reduce the laptop’s power demand.
In Windows 11:
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Find Power mode.
- Choose Balanced or Best power efficiency.
Lowering power consumption can help reduce internal heat and fan noise.

Update the software that controls cooling
