- Check the HDMI cable. Make sure it's secure at both ends, then try another cable if needed.
- Choose the right input. Your monitor or TV needs to be set to the HDMI port you're using.
- Press Windows + P. Select Duplicate or Extend to send the picture to your second screen.

You plug your HP® laptop into a monitor or TV, ready for a bigger screen, and get a big, beautiful "No Signal" message instead. Helpful.
At Asurion, we've helped troubleshoot plenty of stubborn display connections, and we know how quickly a bad cable or Windows setting can derail movie night or a work presentation. Here's how we'd get your HP laptop's HDMI connection working again, without spending hours messing with settings that probably aren't the problem.
Why is your HP laptop HDMI not working?
When an HP laptop won't connect to a TV or monitor through HDMI, the issue usually comes down to the cable, display input, Windows settings, or graphics drivers. A damaged HDMI port is another possibility, especially if the connection feels loose or cuts out when the cable moves.
The easiest way to narrow it down is to see whether Windows detects the display at all. If it does, we'd focus on the display settings. If it doesn't, the physical connection deserves attention first.
How to fix an HP laptop HDMI connection
If your HP laptop isn't sending a picture through HDMI, start with the cable and display before changing anything in Windows.
1. Check the HDMI cable and ports
Disconnect the HDMI cable and reconnect it firmly at both ends. Check for bent connectors, visible damage, or a loose fit.
Try another known-good HDMI cable if you have one. If you're using a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or docking station, bypass it and connect directly to the laptop's HDMI port when available.
Don't force a cable into a damaged port. That can turn a simple connection problem into a more expensive repair.
2. Make sure the TV or monitor is on the right input
A working HDMI connection won't show anything if the display is looking at the wrong input.
Use the TV remote or monitor controls to select the HDMI port you're using, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2. If the display has another HDMI port, try that one too.
3. Tell Windows to use the second screen
Sometimes the HDMI connection is working, but Windows hasn't been told what to display. Press Windows + P and choose Duplicate to mirror your laptop screen or Extend to use the monitor as extra workspace.
If nothing happens, open Settings > System > Display, expand Multiple displays, and select Detect.
If Windows recognizes the screen but the picture still won't appear, try a resolution and refresh rate supported by the monitor.
4. Restart your HP laptop
Disconnect the HDMI cable, restart the HP laptop through Start > Power > Restart, then reconnect the cable once Windows loads.
If the connection stopped working after sleep mode or an update, a restart may be enough to get Windows communicating with the display again.
5. Update your graphics drivers
If the HDMI connection still isn't working, check for outdated or malfunctioning graphics drivers.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart if prompted.
- Open HP Support Assistant, if installed, and check for graphics driver updates for your specific laptop.
If the HDMI problem began immediately after a driver update, rolling back that driver in Device Manager may be more useful than installing another version.
6. Test another display
Connect your HP laptop to another TV or monitor using a cable you know works. If the second display works, the original monitor, its settings, or its HDMI input may be responsible. If neither display works, we'd take a closer look at the laptop's HDMI port or graphics hardware.
When your HP laptop HDMI port may need repair
If the HDMI port feels loose, has bent contacts, or won't work with multiple known-good cables and displays, the problem may be physical damage.
FAQ
Why does my HP laptop say HDMI is connected but show no picture?
