What to do when your HP laptop microphone stops working
⚡ Fast fix
- Check the mute button. Some HP laptops have a microphone mute key that can accidentally silence your voice.
- Choose the right microphone. Go to Settings > System > Sound and check your input device.
- Allow microphone access. Windows privacy settings may be blocking the app you're using.
- Test your mic. Use Windows' built-in microphone test to see whether it's picking up sound.
You're halfway through explaining something important on a video call when someone interrupts with those dreaded words: "You're on mute." Except you're not. At least, you don't think you are.
At Asurion, we've helped troubleshoot plenty of laptop audio problems, and we know a microphone that stops working can throw off everything from work calls to online classes. Here's how we'd get your HP® laptop microphone working again, starting with the settings most likely to cause trouble.
1. Check whether your microphone is muted
Some HP laptops have a dedicated microphone mute key, often marked with a microphone icon. Press it once to see whether the microphone turns back on.
If you're using an external headset, check its mute switch or inline controls too. And if the problem only happens during a Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet call, make sure the microphone isn't muted inside the app.
2. Select the correct microphone in Windows
Windows may be listening to a headset or another connected device instead of your laptop's built-in microphone.
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Input, select the microphone you want to use.
- Speak normally and watch the input volume indicator.
- Adjust the input volume if it's too low.
If the meter moves when you speak, Windows is receiving sound. If people still can't hear you, the problem may be with the app's audio settings rather than the microphone itself.

3. Check microphone permissions
Windows lets you control which apps can access your microphone. If access is turned off, an otherwise working mic may appear broken.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access.
- Enable Let apps access your microphone.
- Make sure the app you're using has permission. For desktop apps, also enable Let desktop apps access your microphone.
Close and reopen the app, then try speaking again.
4. Test your microphone in Windows
Before changing drivers, we'd use Windows' built-in test to see whether the microphone itself is responding.
Open Settings > System > Sound, select your microphone under Input, then find Test your microphone and select Start test.
Speak for a few seconds, stop the test, and review the result. If Windows picks up your voice but your meeting app doesn't, check which microphone that app is using.
5. Restart and update your audio drivers
If Windows isn't detecting the microphone at all, restart your HP laptop first. A temporary audio service or driver glitch may clear up after a reboot.
Still no luck? Check for updates:
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart if prompted.
- Open HP Support Assistant, if installed, and check for recommended audio driver updates for your laptop model.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, rolling back that driver may be more useful than installing another one.
6. Run the Windows audio troubleshooter
Windows includes a troubleshooter that can check for common recording and microphone problems.
Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and look for an audio or recording troubleshooter, if available.
On newer Windows 11 versions, microphone troubleshooting may open through the Get Help app instead. Follow the prompts and test your microphone again afterward.
When your HP laptop microphone may need repair
If your HP laptop still can't detect its built-in microphone, even after checking permissions and updating drivers, we'd try one more comparison: connect a known-working USB headset or external microphone.
FAQ
Why is my HP laptop microphone not working on Zoom or Teams?
The app may be using the wrong microphone or lack permission to access it. Check the microphone selected in the app, then review Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
How do I turn on the microphone on my HP laptop?
Check the microphone mute key, if your model has one. Then open Settings > System > Sound and select the correct microphone under Input.
Why isn't Windows 11 detecting my microphone?
A disabled input device, missing permission, driver issue, or hardware problem could be responsible. Restart the laptop, check sound settings, and install available audio driver updates.
How can I tell if my HP laptop microphone is broken?
Test the built-in microphone in Windows, then try an external microphone. If the external one works but the built-in mic doesn't, we'd investigate the internal microphone or its connection.
