HP laptop USB ports not working? Here’s how to narrow it down
⚡ Fast fix
- Try another USB device. If one accessory won't connect but others work, the port may be fine.
- Check the cable and connection. A damaged cable or loose connector can make a working port look broken.
- Restart your HP laptop. A quick reboot can clear temporary USB connection glitches.
- Check Device Manager. Missing or malfunctioning USB drivers may explain why your laptop isn't recognizing devices.
You plug your mouse, flash drive, or phone into your HP® laptop and get absolutely nothing. No notification, no charging, no sign that Windows even noticed. Before assuming the USB port is toast, there are a few ways to figure out where the connection is failing.
At Asurion, we've seen USB problems caused by everything from worn-out cables to damaged ports and Windows driver issues. Here's how we'd narrow down what's happening and get your HP laptop recognizing USB devices again.
Why are your HP laptop's USB ports not working?
A USB port that suddenly stops responding doesn't always have the same cause as one that's been loose for months. Common culprits include faulty accessories, damaged cables, outdated drivers, power-management settings, or physical damage to the port itself.
One useful clue is whether the problem affects every USB port or just one. If a flash drive works in one port but not another, we'd focus on that connection. If nothing works anywhere, Windows or the laptop's USB controller deserves a closer look.
How to fix USB ports that aren't working on an HP laptop
When an HP laptop won't recognize a USB device, start by ruling out the accessory and cable before changing Windows settings or assuming the port needs repair.
1. Test another USB device or port
Unplug the accessory and try it in another USB port. If it works there, return to the original port with a different device that you know works.
This quick comparison can save a lot of unnecessary troubleshooting. If only one device fails, the accessory or its cable may be responsible. If one particular port refuses to recognize anything, that port needs closer attention.
2. Inspect the USB port and cable
Take a close look at the port using a flashlight. Dust, bent contacts, or a connector that moves around too easily can interfere with the connection.
Check the USB cable for fraying or damage, too. Try another compatible cable if possible, and avoid forcing a connector that doesn't fit properly.
For USB-C ports, remember that not every port supports the same features. Some handle charging and data, while others also support video output. Check the specifications for your HP model before assuming a feature should work.

3. Restart your HP laptop
Windows can occasionally lose track of a connected USB device, especially after sleep mode or a driver hiccup. Disconnect the accessory, restart the HP laptop through Start > Power > Restart, then reconnect the device once Windows loads.
If you're using a USB hub or docking station, bypass it for now and plug the accessory directly into the laptop. A problem with the hub's power supply or connection can affect several devices at once.
4. Check USB drivers in Device Manager
If your HP laptop still isn't detecting USB devices, we'd check whether Windows is reporting a driver problem.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for devices with a yellow warning icon or an error message.
- Right-click the affected device and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart the laptop and test the USB connection again.
If Windows can't find an updated driver, check HP Support Assistant or HP's official support site for drivers specific to your laptop model. Avoid downloading USB drivers from unfamiliar third-party websites.
5. Check USB power-management settings
Windows sometimes allows certain USB devices to enter low-power states to conserve battery life. Usually that works fine, but it can contribute to devices disconnecting or failing to respond after sleep.
If the problem happens mainly after your laptop wakes up:
- Open Device Manager and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Double-click an applicable USB Root Hub or Generic USB Hub entry.
- Open the Power Management tab, if available.
- Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
- Select OK and restart the laptop.
Not every HP laptop or Windows 11 configuration shows this option. If it's missing, skip it rather than changing unrelated power settings.
This is a troubleshooting test, not a setting we'd automatically change on every laptop. Disabling USB power saving may increase battery use.
6. Check Windows updates and HP diagnostics
If several USB ports are failing, check for Windows updates before assuming the hardware is damaged.
Open Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when prompted. HP Support Assistant can also help identify recommended updates for your model.
If the problem continues, HP PC Hardware Diagnostics may offer relevant component tests, depending on the laptop and diagnostic version.
To open HP's diagnostics environment:
- Shut down the laptop.
- Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
- Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
- Review the available component tests and run any relevant USB or system tests.
Our guide to running HP hardware diagnostics explains how to use the tool and interpret failure results. Not every version includes a dedicated USB test, and a passing test doesn't rule out every physical port problem.

FAQ
Why are all the USB ports on my HP laptop not working?
A Windows driver problem, USB controller issue, or power-management setting could be responsible. Restart the laptop, check Device Manager, and install available Windows and HP updates.
How do I reset the USB ports on my HP laptop?
Start by restarting Windows. If the problem continues, open Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers and check for errors. Windows may need to reinstall an affected USB device driver, but we'd avoid uninstalling every controller without a specific reason.
Why is my HP laptop USB port charging but not transferring data?
The cable may support charging but not data transfer, or the USB device may need a driver or different connection mode. Try a known data-capable cable and check the port's supported features.
Can a damaged USB port on an HP laptop be repaired?
Often, yes. The repair depends on the port's design and whether the damage extends to the internal circuit board. A diagnostic can help determine whether replacing the connector is practical.
