What to do when your HP laptop won’t shut down
⚡ Fast fix
- Close stubborn apps. A frozen program may be preventing Windows from shutting down.
- Try restarting first. A restart can clear temporary glitches that keep the laptop running.
- Check for updates. Pending Windows updates or outdated drivers may interfere with shutdown.
- Still won't turn off? Hold the power button for about 10 seconds as a last resort, but save your work first.
You've finished your work, closed your 27 browser tabs, and told your HP® laptop to shut down. Except the screen is still glowing, the fan is running, and Windows seems determined to keep the day going.
We've helped troubleshoot plenty of stubborn laptops at Asurion, and a computer that won't turn off doesn't automatically mean something is broken. From frozen apps to Windows power settings, here's how we'd figure out what's keeping your HP laptop running—and what to try before forcing it off.
Why won't your HP laptop shut down?
If Windows is stuck on "Shutting down," an app may be refusing to close, an update may still be running, or a driver may not be responding. Sometimes the laptop does shut down, then wakes up again because of a power setting or connected device.
That distinction matters. A laptop stuck on the shutdown screen needs a different approach from one that turns off and immediately starts back up.
How to fix an HP laptop that won't shut down
Asurion recommends walking through these steps to get your HP to turn off when it's being stubborn.
1. Close apps that are keeping Windows open
If your laptop still responds, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Under Processes, look for apps marked Not responding. Select the stuck app and choose End task, then try shutting down again from Start > Power > Shut down.
Save any open work first. Ending an app can discard unsaved changes, and there's no reason to close every background process just because one program is misbehaving.
2. Try a restart instead of shutting down
This might sound backward, but restarting can help when Windows won't shut down normally. A restart closes the current Windows session and starts a fresh one, which can clear temporary problems that survive a normal shutdown.
Select Start > Power > Restart. Once the laptop starts again, try Shut down.
If the laptop is completely frozen and won't respond, hold the physical power button until it turns off. Use this only when necessary, since unsaved work can be lost. Don't interrupt an active BIOS or Windows update.

3. Check for unfinished Windows updates
If the problem started after an update, Windows may still be trying to finish installing it.
Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install any pending updates, then restart when prompted.
If updates keep failing, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run Windows Update. Our guide to updating an HP laptop covers Windows and HP driver updates in more detail.
4. Check Fast Startup if the problem keeps coming back
Fast Startup helps Windows start faster after a shutdown by saving part of the system state. But on some laptops, it can also contribute to shutdown problems.
We'd test turning it off temporarily:
- Search for and open Control Panel.
- Select Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Choose Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable, if shown.
- Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).
- Select Save changes, then try shutting down.
If the option doesn't appear, Fast Startup may not be available or enabled on that laptop. There's no need to change other power settings just to make it show up.
5. Update HP drivers and disconnect accessories
A driver conflict can interfere with Windows shutting down, especially when the laptop is connected to a dock, external monitor, USB drive, or other accessory. Disconnect nonessential devices and try shutting down again. If that works, reconnect them one at a time to identify what's causing trouble.
For driver updates, open HP Support Assistant, if installed, and check for updates for your specific laptop model. We'd focus on chipset, graphics, and power-related drivers rather than installing every optional update at once.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, rolling back that driver may be more useful than installing another one.

FAQ
How do I force shut down an HP laptop that won't respond?
Press and hold the power button until the laptop turns off, usually about 10 seconds. This can cause unsaved work to be lost, so only use it when Windows isn't responding and no update is actively installing.
Why does my HP laptop restart instead of shutting down?
A Windows power setting, connected accessory, driver problem, or firmware setting may be causing it to start again. Try disconnecting accessories and temporarily disabling Fast Startup to narrow down the issue.
Why is my HP laptop stuck on the shutting down screen?
An unresponsive app, unfinished update, or driver conflict could be preventing Windows from closing. Give any active updates time to finish, then check Task Manager and restart the laptop if Windows still responds.
Will forcing my HP laptop to shut down damage it?
An occasional forced shutdown usually won't damage the hardware, but it can cause unsaved work to be lost or interrupt important system updates. It's best saved for when the laptop is completely unresponsive.
