What to do when your HP laptop won’t wake from sleep
⚡ Fast fix
- Try the keyboard or touchpad. Press a key, move the mouse, or briefly press the power button to wake your laptop.
- Check the charger. A drained battery can make a sleeping laptop look completely unresponsive.
- Refresh the display. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to wake a screen that's stuck on black.
- Still asleep? Hold the power button until the laptop shuts off, then restart it as a last resort.
You close your HP® laptop for a quick break, come back, and open the lid. Nothing. The screen stays black, the keyboard won't respond, and the computer seems pretty committed to its nap.
At Asurion, we've seen how finicky Windows sleep settings and power management can be. Sometimes the laptop is awake but the display hasn't caught up. Other times, a driver or power issue is keeping it stuck. Here's how we'd get your HP laptop responding again—and keep it from sleeping through its next wake-up call.
Why won't your HP laptop wake up from sleep mode?
When a laptop enters sleep mode, Windows saves your current session while using less power. It should wake when you open the lid, press a key, or use the power button, depending on your model and settings.
If it doesn't, the problem could be a drained battery, a frozen Windows session, a graphics driver issue, or a problem with how the laptop manages power. Some newer HP laptops use Modern Standby, which handles sleep differently from older Windows computers.
How to fix an HP laptop that won't wake from sleep
If your HP laptop is stuck in sleep mode, start with a few simple checks to get it responding before moving on to more involved troubleshooting.
1. Try waking it without forcing a shutdown
Before holding down the power button, try pressing a key or moving your finger across the touchpad. If nothing happens, briefly press and release the power button once. Don't hold it down yet. That can force the laptop off, which may cause you to lose unsaved work.
If you're using an external monitor or dock, disconnect it and check the laptop's built-in display. Sometimes Windows wakes normally but sends the picture to the wrong screen.
2. Check the battery and charger
A laptop that went to sleep with a low battery may have run out of power while you were away. Connect the HP laptop to its charger and give it a few minutes. Check for a charging light, and make sure the power adapter and cable are securely connected.
If there's no sign of power, try a working outlet and inspect the charging cable for damage. Our guide to restarting an HP laptop covers additional startup checks.

3. Refresh the display if the screen stays black
If you can hear the fan running or see keyboard lights but the screen remains black, Windows may be awake while the display is stuck.
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver. You may hear a beep or see the screen flicker briefly. If you're using an external monitor, press Windows + P to check the display mode once the screen responds.
If neither screen shows an image, we'd move on to restarting the laptop rather than repeatedly pressing keyboard shortcuts.
4. Force a restart if the laptop is completely frozen
If the laptop won't respond to the keyboard, touchpad, or power button, a forced shutdown may be necessary.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices and accessories.
- Press and hold the power button for about 10–15 seconds, until the laptop turns off.
- Wait a few seconds.
- Press the power button again to restart it.
This won't factory reset Windows, but you could lose unsaved work from the previous session.
If the laptop restarts normally, we'd check for updates before assuming the problem is solved.
5. Update Windows and HP drivers
Outdated graphics, chipset, or power-management drivers can interfere with sleep and wake behavior.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- Restart the laptop if prompted.
- Open HP Support Assistant, if installed, and check for recommended driver updates for your model.
Our guide to updating an HP laptop covers the process in more detail. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, rolling back that specific driver may be more useful than installing additional updates.
6. Review your sleep and power settings
If your HP laptop wakes after a restart but keeps getting stuck the next time it sleeps, check how Windows handles power.
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts. On some Windows 11 versions, this menu appears as Screen and sleep.
Review when the screen turns off and when the laptop enters sleep mode. For troubleshooting, you can temporarily extend the sleep timeout and see whether the problem returns.
If the laptop only has trouble waking after it's been closed for several hours, it may be entering hibernation rather than ordinary sleep. That's worth checking before changing advanced settings.
7. Check whether your keyboard can wake the laptop
If the laptop wakes with the power button but ignores the keyboard, Windows may not be allowing that device to wake the computer.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards and double-click your keyboard.
- Open the Power Management tab, if available.
- Check Allow this device to wake the computer.
- Select OK and test sleep mode again.
Not every HP laptop offers this setting, especially models using Modern Standby. If the option is missing, don't worry about forcing it. The power button should still provide a way to wake a properly functioning laptop.

How do I force restart an HP laptop that won't wake up?
Hold the power button until the laptop shuts off, usually about 10–15 seconds. Wait briefly, then press it again to restart. This can cause unsaved work to be lost.
