It's a Saturday morning, and you sit down at your laptop to take care of a few items on your to-do list. You power it on and pull up your browser, but something's wrong. You can't access the sites you need. Is Spectrum® down in my area, you wonder.

Asurion Experts fix tech problems like this every day. Whether you're struggling with a bad internet connection or need help with a favorite gaming console, we can help. Here's how to find out if Spectrum Internet® is down, plus steps to troubleshoot the issue.

How to verify a Spectrum outage in your neighborhood

A Spectrum outage won't only affect you. It can also impact others in your area who use Spectrum Internet. And chances are, they're all asking the same question: Is Spectrum Internet down in my neighborhood?

Many times, users experiencing an outage will report it through a third-party site such as Downdetector. This site collects outage reports from people worldwide and shares real-time service status updates. If you suspect this may be a broader outage, it's likely that others in your area have reported it.

Another useful source for outage reports is social media. Sometimes local news sources will share current outage information with their followers. You can also try checking with nearby friends or neighbors who also use Spectrum Internet. If their service is down, too, you're probably facing a system interruption.

Troubleshoot your home network connection

You've checked the Spectrum app and Downdetector for outage reports, but it seems you're alone with the issue. Don't worry — it may just be a hiccup with your network connection. Try these troubleshooting options to get to the bottom of the problem.

Power cycle your router and modem

Your internet connection is supported by two devices: a router and a modem. The router distributes the internet connection between your devices, and the modem links your home to Spectrum's internet service. Either device can experience a temporary glitch that causes it to stop working properly. But there's an easy fix — power cycling.

To power cycle your router and modem, unplug each device from its power source. Check the modem's cables, including coaxial connections, to make sure they're securely attached. Allow at least 60 seconds to pass before plugging the router and modem into their power source. Give the router and modem a few minutes to fully boot up before testing your connection.

Test the modem connection

If a quick power cycle doesn't resolve your issue, there may be a problem with either the router or modem. To determine which one is causing the problem, plug an Ethernet cable into the modem and a connected device, such as a laptop. Make sure the router isn't a part of the connection.

This process tests whether you're receiving an internet signal from Spectrum. If you can go online with the Ethernet cable plugged into your modem, there is no local outage. You have service, but something is causing the connection to drop when you use your router.

To fix router issues, check your router's user manual. There may be a setting you need to adjust to restore your internet connection.

If you can't access the internet when using an Ethernet cable, there may be a local Spectrum outage. Get in touch with Spectrum for additional assistance.

What to do if your internet stays down after an outage

If you continue to experience Spectrum connection issues after an outage, reach out to Spectrum's customer service hotline for assistance. There may be a faulty line in your area that's causing your issues. For outages that last more than a few hours, consider asking for bill credits for the downtime. These credits can offset the time you lost without internet service.
