Kindle not syncing reading progress? How to fix Whispersync
⚡ Fast fix
- Get both devices online. Reading progress can’t sync if one device hasn’t connected.
- Sync before switching devices. Give Kindle™ a chance to save your latest reading position.
- Open the book on both devices. If only one title is behind, focus on that book instead of your whole library.
- Still getting sent back a few chapters? Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.
There’s a particular kind of disappointment that comes from opening a book on your Kindle and realizing it has absolutely no idea where you left off. Now you’re flipping through pages trying to remember whether you stopped before the big reveal—or five chapters after it.
Kindle is designed to keep your reading position with you as you move between devices. At Asurion, our experts know their way around the settings and connections that make everyday features like this work. Here’s what we’d check when your reading progress stops following along.
Start with the device you read on last
Before trying to fix the Kindle that’s behind, go back to the phone, tablet, or e-reader where you last made progress. Open the book and make sure it’s sitting on the page where you actually stopped.
Then connect that device to the internet and run a manual sync. On a Kindle e-reader, open Quick Actions or the menu and choose Sync or Sync and Check for Items. Amazon says syncing backs up your furthest page read along with other reading information. Once that finishes, move to the other device and sync there too.
Make sure both devices use the same Amazon account
If your progress syncs between some devices but one seems completely unaware of the others, check the account registered on that device.
The same book sitting on two screens doesn’t necessarily mean those devices are connected to the same Kindle library. This is especially worth checking after setting up a new Kindle, changing Amazon accounts, or reinstalling the Kindle app. If the accounts don't match, fix that before spending time restarting or redownloading books.
Manually sync the device that’s behind
Sometimes the reading position has already reached Amazon’s servers and the other Kindle simply hasn’t pulled it down yet.
On a Kindle e-reader, open Quick Actions or Menu and choose Sync. In the Kindle mobile app, open More > Sync now. Amazon notes that the mobile app displays the latest sync date and time once the process finishes.
Open the book afterward and check whether Kindle offers to move you to the furthest page read.
If only one book won’t sync
When every other book remembers your place except one, we’d leave the account and device settings alone. One stubborn title points us toward that book rather than a broken Kindle sync.
First, make sure the problem book has finished downloading on both devices. If it has and the reading position still won’t update, remove the downloaded copy from the device that’s behind, restart it, then download the book again.
Choose Remove Download, not Permanently Delete. Our guide to removing books from your Kindle explains why that distinction matters.
Restart if syncing has stopped altogether
If several books have stopped updating across devices, restart the Kindle before changing anything more disruptive. Once it comes back, reconnect to Wi-Fi and run another manual sync.
A Kindle that also struggles to download books, refresh its library, or use other online features may have a broader connection problem. In that case, we'd focus on getting the device reliably online before expecting reading progress to catch up.
Check for a Kindle software update
If syncing keeps falling behind even with a solid connection, make sure the Kindle is current. Connect it to Wi-Fi and check Settings for the software update options available on your model.
After updating, sync the device again and open the book you're currently reading. We wouldn't reset the Kindle just because reading progress is behind; that's a lot of disruption for a feature that usually comes back once the account, connection, and sync are behaving normally.

FAQ
Why is my Kindle not syncing across devices?
Make sure both devices are online, registered to the same Amazon account, and manually synced. Start with the device where you read most recently so your latest position gets saved first.
How do I sync Kindle to the furthest page read?
Open the book on the device where you last read, connect to the internet, and manually sync it. Then sync the second device and reopen the book. Amazon recommends this same sequence when troubleshooting a reading position that hasn’t updated.
Does Kindle sync reading progress between a Kindle and the Kindle app?
Yes. Kindle sync can keep your furthest page read available across compatible Kindle devices and reading apps when they’re connected and using the same account.
Why is only one Kindle book not syncing?
If other books sync normally, the issue may be isolated to that title or its downloaded copy. Remove the download, restart the device, and download the book again before changing account-wide settings.
