An Amazon Luna® controller that turns on but refuses to join the game can leave you staring at a very nice controller while playing absolutely nothing.

If you’re playing Luna, start with Cloud Direct
Cloud Direct connects the controller over Wi-Fi directly to Amazon’s Luna servers and is designed to reduce controller latency.
For a controller that hasn’t finished setup:
- Put in two working AA batteries.
- Hold Home for about 3 seconds.
- Look for an orange light circling the Home button.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Open the Luna Controller app and sign in to the Amazon account being used for Luna.
- Select Set up New Luna Controller and follow the prompts.
If the controller connects through Cloud Direct, there’s no need to pair it to the gaming screen over Bluetooth just to use Luna.
Pair Bluetooth when that’s the connection you need
Bluetooth makes sense when using the Luna controller with a compatible device outside Cloud Direct, or when a particular setup calls for Bluetooth.
Hold Action + B for about 3 seconds until the light pulses white, then open the Bluetooth settings on the device and select the Luna controller.

On Windows PCs, Amazon also requires the Luna Controller hardware driver for Bluetooth gameplay. If the controller connects but the buttons behave strangely, make sure that driver is installed before blaming the controller.
The light ring can save some guessing
The controller’s LEDs are useful when setup gets stuck:
- An orange circling light means setup mode is active.
- A pulsing white light means Bluetooth pairing mode.
- White indicates a Bluetooth connection state.
- Purple is associated with Cloud Direct and Wi-Fi connection states.
If the controller never lights up at all, replace or reseat the batteries before troubleshooting wireless settings.
Try USB-C on a PC or Mac
If a compatible PC or Mac is nearby, connect the controller using a data-capable USB-C cable.
A controller that works immediately over USB-C but refuses Bluetooth points toward the wireless pairing rather than the buttons or basic controller input. If USB-C and Bluetooth both work but Cloud Direct doesn’t, focus on Wi-Fi and the controller setup in the Luna Controller app.
That simple swap is often more useful than resetting everything at once.
Reset the controller only if pairing still fails
A factory reset erases the Luna controller’s device settings, so it will need to be set up again afterward.
To reset it:
- Press and hold Home + Menu together.
- Keep holding until the light ring turns purple and then orange, about 6 seconds.
- Release the buttons.
- Wait for the orange circling light.
- Open the Luna Controller app and set up the controller again.
If the same controller still won’t connect through any supported method after fresh batteries and a reset, the issue may be more than a saved pairing.
