How to fix Nintendo Switch audio issues

⚡ Fast fix
- Muted by accident? Check the volume buttons and make sure the system isn't muted.
- Headphones plugged in? Disconnect and reconnect them to rule out a headphone jack issue.
- Restart your Switch—A quick reboot can clear temporary audio glitches.
- Check Bluetooth devices—Your audio may be trying to play through a connected headset instead of the console speakers.
You’re dropping into Splatoon™ 3, ready to clean up the map—and suddenly, there’s zero sound. Whether that’s glitchy effects, muted music, or silent battles, audio issues on your Nintendo Switch® are a real buzzkill.
Around here, a bunch of us are gamers too. We troubleshoot Switches often, and we’ve got your back—so you can get back in the game. If you want a little help from a pro, bring your system to your uBreakiFix by Asurion store for a free device check.
Restart your console
A simple reboot works more often than you'd think. Hold the Power button for about three seconds and tap Power Options > Restart. Once the Switch restarts, jump back into your game and test the audio.
Double-check your volume settings
Even seasoned gamers can forget this one! Using the volume buttons on top of the Switch:
- Under System Settings > System, make sure Mute when headphones are disconnected is OFF.
If you’ve set up parental controls, double-check that audio isn’t restricted.
Test with and without headphones
Headphones acting up? Try swapping them or remove them entirely to test the built-in speakers.
- For wired headphones, plug in and see if you get sound.
- For Bluetooth headsets, make sure they're paired under System Settings > Bluetooth® Audio.
- If docked, pop the system into handheld mode to see if the speakers work there.
Docked mode vs. handheld mode
If the sound works in handheld but not docked mode, the console's internal surround-sound encoder might be confusing your TV.
- On the console home menu, go to System Settings > TV Output.
- Scroll down to TV Sound, and switch it from Surround to Stereo or Mono.
- Test the sound again to see if the audio channels immediately map correctly to your TV's built-in speakers.
Still nothing? Your dock may need repair.
Update your system and test another game
Sometimes the issue isn’t hardware at all, but software.
- Head to System Settings > System > System Update and install any updates.
- Try a different game to rule out game-specific audio glitches.
Inspect for physical issues
Grab a flashlight and check the headphone jack, volume buttons, and speaker area for debris, lint, or damage—not fun, but necessary. If your system looks grimy, now’s a great time to follow our guide on how to clean your Nintendo Switch.

FAQ
Why is there no sound on my Nintendo Switch?
It could be a simple setting, a glitchy game, or a hardware issue. Restarting and checking audio settings is a smart first move.
Why do I only get sound in handheld mode?
Your dock or HDMI connection may be failing. Try a new cable or TV to isolate the issue.
How can I fix stuck headphone mode?
Try plugging and unplugging headphones a few times or reboot the console. Inspect the headphone jack for debris.
Is it worth repairing my Switch’s audio port or speaker?
Yes—repairs often beat replacing the entire system. Bring it in, and we'll check it out at your local uBreakiFix by Asurion store.
