Philips® Hue smart bulbs let you control your lighting with the tap of your finger. You can make sure your front yard lights always greet you after work or even sync smart lights with music. But you lose all that control if your Philips Hue lights are unreachable.
At Asurion, our experts help you get the most out of your smart home devices. If you're trying to pair your smart lights with Wi-Fi or curious about things you can do with smart lights, we've got plenty of advice. Here's what to do if your Philips Hue lights are unreachable.
What "unreachable" means in Philips Hue
You open up your app to tweak your lighting—but instead, you see a Philips Hue unreachable error. You feel a flutter of panic. Are all your lights off?
Probably not. The "unreachable" status usually means a bulb has stopped communicating with the Bridge. That means you can't control the light through the Philips Hue app, but it's usually still turned on. However, power outages can affect Philips Hue connectivity, and so can moving the Bridge too far from the bulb.
Your Hue lights might also go offline if the Hue Bridge is not responding or if your internet network goes down. For example, if your router breaks, you won't be able to communicate with any of your lights along the Bridge.
Check power and light connectivity
If the Hue app shows your lights as unreachable, check for physical issues first.
This might seem obvious, but make sure no one has accidentally turned off a wall switch. Sometimes, guests may not realize that you have smart lights, or you may flip a switch out of habit.
If the wall switch is turned on, try unplugging the Bridge and plugging in another device. If that doesn't work either, there might be something wrong with your outlet. Consider hiring an electrician to troubleshoot instead of doing it yourself.
Distance can also cause Philips Hue connection issues. If your electricity works, try moving the bulbs and Bridge closer, or add a second Bridge to increase your coverage.
Check for interference, too. Thick walls and metal fixtures can block the signals between your Bridge and bulbs. The same goes for the router.

Reconnect your Bridge and lights
Don't panic if your smart lights are not responding. These Philips Hue troubleshooting tips can get you back in the driver's seat.
Reset the Hue Bridge
The Bridge is the hub that connects each smart bulb to the app. If all lights are unreachable, try resetting this device first. Sometimes, unplugging the Bridge for 30 seconds and plugging it back in is all it takes to fix Hue system connectivity issues.
Check the Ethernet connection and router
Hue network issues often cause unreachable lights. Make sure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to the Bridge.
Pay attention to the lights at the top of the Bridge, too. The middle light means your Bridge is connected to the router, while the right one shows that it's communicating with the Philips cloud servers. If one of those lights is missing, try restarting the Bridge.
An offline router can also cause Philips Hue Wi-Fi problems. Restart it by holding down the power or reset button.
Update firmware
A Hue firmware update issue could cause an "unreachable" error and prevent your app from communicating with the Bridge and smart lights. There might be a newer update that fixes the issue, so check for updates in the Apple App Store® or the Google Play™ Store.
Did you run into any problems after installing the update? Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Hue app to clear glitches.
Reset and resync unreachable bulbs
If only one or two bulbs are unreachable, you can re-add lights to the Bridge by factory resetting them. Follow these steps:
- Open the Hue app.
- Tap Settings > Lights.
- Press the blue + button.
- Locate the bulb's six-digit serial number, which is usually printed on the light or on a tag on the cord.
- Tap Use serial number and enter the code. The light will flash when it resets.
Before you plug the bulb back in, you'll need to resync it:
- Go to the Hue app's Home screen and tap the three dots.
- Tap Add devices.
- Choose a location for your bulb.
- Scan the QR code on your smart light and tap Next.
- Install the light.

FAQ
Do Hue lights need Wi-Fi to work?
Hue bulbs don’t connect directly to Wi-Fi —they connect to the Hue Bridge. If the Bridge loses internet or power, the bulbs may show as unreachable in the app.
Why do my Hue lights work manually but not in the app?
If the light turns on at the wall switch but not in the app, the issue is usually with the Bridge connection—not the bulb itself.
Should I reset a Hue bulb if it says unreachable?
Only if restarting the Bridge and checking connections doesn’t work. Resetting removes the bulb from your system, so use it as a last step.
