Ring battery draining fast? What to check first
⚡ Fast fix
- Check Battery Status first. The Ring app can often tell you what's using the most power.
- Busy street? Tighten your motion zones so the camera records what matters—not every passing car.
- Weak Wi-Fi? A poor connection can drain the battery faster than you'd expect.
- Still draining? Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.
A battery-powered Ring™ doorbell or camera shouldn't need to be charged every time someone walks past your house.
If the battery suddenly starts draining much faster than it used to, the cause usually isn't a bad battery. More often, the camera is working harder than it needs to—recording frequent motion, reconnecting to weak Wi-Fi, or dealing with extreme temperatures.
Asurion Experts troubleshoot smart home devices every day. Here's where we'd start to help your Ring battery last longer.
Check battery health first
Before changing any settings, see what the Ring app is already telling you.
Open Device Settings > Power Settings to review Battery Status and Feature Power Usage. If a feature is marked as using extra power, that's usually the best place to start. Then open Device Health to check your battery level, Wi-Fi signal, and power source.
Reduce unnecessary motion events
If your Ring device faces a busy street, sidewalk, or a tree that never stops moving, it may be recording far more events than you realize.
Open Motion Settings and:
- Tighten your motion zones.
- Lower motion sensitivity slightly.
- Exclude busy areas that don't matter.
Then give the new settings a few days before deciding whether battery life has improved.
Our guide to adjusting Ring motion detection range explains how to focus the camera on the areas that actually matter.
Adjust Motion Frequency
Battery-powered Ring devices can take a short break between motion checks, which helps extend battery life.
Under Motion Settings > Advanced Settings > Motion Frequency, choose:
- Frequently for the fastest response.
- Regularly for a balance between responsiveness and battery life.
- Periodically to maximize battery life.
If your camera overlooks a busy area, switching to Regularly or Periodically can make a noticeable difference. Just remember that longer pauses between motion checks may mean the camera misses activity immediately after a previous event.

Cut back on Live View
Every time you open Live View, the camera wakes up, connects to Wi-Fi, and starts streaming video. The same goes for linked-device automations that trigger multiple Ring cameras from a single event.
If you're checking Live View often—or several Ring devices are recording the same motion—consider trimming back automations you no longer need.
Check the Wi-Fi signal
Weak Wi-Fi forces your Ring device to reconnect repeatedly, which uses more battery than most people realize.
Open Device Health and review the network signal. If it's weak:
- Move the router to a better location.
- Reduce walls or metal objects between the router and the Ring device.
- Add a mesh point or Ring Chime Pro if needed.
If battery drain comes with repeated disconnects, our guide to fixing a Ring doorbell that keeps going offline can help. If the device won't reconnect at all, fixing a Ring doorbell that won't connect to Wi-Fi walks through the next steps.
Don't overlook the weather
Cold weather naturally reduces how much usable power rechargeable batteries can deliver. Extreme heat can also affect charging and long-term battery health.
If weather is the culprit:
- Let a removable battery warm to room temperature before charging.
- Avoid charging batteries that are extremely hot or cold.
- Shade the device from direct afternoon sun when practical.
Once temperatures return to normal, battery performance usually does too—assuming the battery is still healthy.
Charge the battery correctly
A Ring battery can take several hours to charge fully. If your model uses a removable battery, let it charge until the indicator light shows it's finished before reinstalling it.
If the battery percentage never increases, our guide to fixing a Ring doorbell that isn't charging can help narrow down the cause.
Consider the battery's age
Rechargeable batteries naturally lose capacity over time. If you've already optimized the settings and the battery still drains unusually fast, the battery itself may be nearing the end of its lifespan.
Consider a permanent power source
If you're charging the battery every few weeks despite optimizing everything else, it may be time to rethink the installation. Depending on your Ring model, a solar charger, plug-in adapter, or hardwired connection can reduce how often you need to recharge the battery manually.

FAQ
Why is my Ring battery suddenly draining so fast?
Frequent motion events, Live View sessions, weak Wi-Fi, extreme temperatures, and battery age are the most common causes.
How do I see what's draining my Ring battery?
Open Device Settings > Power Settings and review Feature Power Usage in the Ring app.
Does weak Wi-Fi drain a Ring battery?
Yes. A poor connection forces the device to reconnect repeatedly, which uses extra battery power.
Does cold weather affect a Ring battery?
Yes. Cold temperatures reduce battery performance, and charging may pause until the battery warms up.
How often should a Ring battery need charging?
It depends on motion activity, Live View use, Wi-Fi signal strength, weather, and battery age. If charging suddenly becomes much more frequent than it used to, it's worth checking those factors first.
