How to get your Ring Chime ringing again

- Check the outlet—Make sure the Chime actually has power before changing Wi-Fi settings.

Someone presses the doorbell, the phone gets the alert, and the Ring™ Chime plugged into the wall says absolutely nothing. If the whole point was hearing the doorbell from another room, silent mode isn’t exactly helping.
Asurion Experts help people get connected-home devices working together every day. A quiet Ring Chime usually comes down to power, Wi-Fi, its link to the doorbell, or an alert setting that got changed along the way.
Make sure the doorbell is working first
Press the Ring doorbell and watch the phone. If a Ring alert appears and the event shows up normally, the doorbell is doing its part; keep the troubleshooting on the Chime.
If the phone doesn’t see the doorbell press either, our guide to fixing a Ring doorbell that isn’t working is a better place to start.
Power-cycle the Chime
Unplug the Ring Chime from the wall, wait about 30 seconds, and plug it back in. If possible, test another outlet too. That rules out a loose connection or outlet problem before you reconnect the Chime to the network.
Give it time to start up, then press the doorbell again.
Reconnect it to Wi-Fi
If the Chime shows offline in the Ring app:
- Open the Ring app.
- Go to Devices and select the Chime.
- Open Device Health.
- Under Network, choose Reconnect or Change Network.
- Follow the prompts to connect it to Wi-Fi again.
If the Chime keeps losing its connection after reconnecting, check the router and signal where it’s plugged in. Our guide to fixing Ring Wi-Fi problems has useful network checks even when the Chime—not the doorbell—is the device having trouble.
Put the Chime back in setup mode if needed
During setup, the Chime should indicate that it’s ready to connect. If the light isn’t flashing when the Ring app expects it to be, press and hold the button on the side of the Chime for about five seconds, then continue through the in-app setup prompts.
There’s no need to reset the entire Ring doorbell just because the separate Chime lost its connection.
Check that the Chime is linked to the doorbell
A Chime can be online and still stay quiet if it isn’t set to play a sound for that doorbell.
In the Ring app:
- Open Devices and select the Ring doorbell or camera.
- Tap Linked Chimes.
- Choose Rings for doorbell presses, or Motion Detected if you also want motion sounds.
- Tap the music-note control for the alert you want.
- Save the changes and test the doorbell.
This is especially worth checking after adding a new Chime, replacing a doorbell, or reorganizing devices in the app.
Make sure Chime Snooze isn’t still on
Open the Chime in the Ring app and check Device Settings > Chime Snooze. If Snooze is active, turn it off and save the change.
It’s an easy setting to forget after intentionally silencing the Chime for a meeting, a sleeping kid, or one extremely barky afternoon.
If it keeps dropping offline
A Chime that reconnects successfully and then falls offline again is more of a network problem than a sound problem. Try a different outlet closer to the router and watch whether the connection becomes more stable.
If the Chime stays powered but can’t remain online from more than one location, continue with Wi-Fi troubleshooting rather than repeatedly changing tones or doorbell settings.

FAQ
Why isn’t my Ring Chime ringing?
Check power first, then make sure the Chime is online, linked to the correct doorbell, and not snoozed.
How do I reconnect my Ring Chime?
Open the Chime under Devices > Device Health and use Reconnect or Change Network under the network section.
Why is my Ring Chime online but still silent?
Check Linked Chimes for the doorbell and make sure an alert sound is enabled for Rings. Also check Chime Snooze.
How do I put a Ring Chime in setup mode?
If the setup light isn’t flashing, press and hold the side button for about five seconds, then follow the Ring app prompts.
