The Nintendo Wii® is more than just a console; it's a treasure trove of cherished game night memories. Before you get caught up in game mode, make sure the console’s settings are suitable for all players by updating the parental controls for family game night and solo players.

Not sure where to start? That’s where we come in.

At Asurion, our experts have seen it all. From protecting your online gaming accounts to making YouTube kid-friendly—we’ve got you covered. Here’s our guide to setting up Nintendo Wii parental controls and privacy settings.

Best practices for privacy settings

Implementing privacy settings is essential for creating a safer gaming experience for players of all ages. You can use them to:

  • Manage how long players can use the Wii.
  • Restrict internet access or online interactions, especially for younger players.
  • Set appropriate restrictions for which games the player can play and purchase based on the game’s rating.

How to setup Nintendo Wii parental controls

Setting up parental controls on your Wii ensures a safe and enjoyable gaming environment. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Using the Wii remote, select the Wii Options icon.
  2. Select Wii Settings > Parental Controls.
  3. Click OK three times. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up a 4-digit PIN. You’ll need that PIN to change the parental control settings or to play restricted content.
  4. Select Game Settings and PIN > The Highest Game Rating. Here, you can set the highest game rating level you want to allow for play without entering the PIN. For example, if your child is seven, you would choose content suitable for everyone (denoted with an “E”). Then, select OK.
  5. Configure the settings for online access per your preference, like restricting purchases on the online Wii Shop Channel and blocking the console from exchanging messages with other gamers.
  6. Select Settings Complete to save your changes.

Forgot your Nintendo Parental Control PIN?

If you forget your PIN, you can use the Wii parental control reset password tool.

  1. Using the Wii remote, select the Wii Options icon > Wii Settings > the blue arrow.
  2. Select Parental Controls > Yes.
  3. Select I forgot.
  4. Answer your secret question or tap I forgot.
