How to start your HP laptop in Safe Mode
💡 Need to know
- Safe Mode runs the basics. Windows loads only essential drivers and services to help troubleshoot problems.
- Start from Windows settings. Use System > Recovery to access Safe Mode when the laptop still works.
- Can't get past the sign-in screen? You can open Windows Recovery without signing in.
- Your files stay put. Safe Mode doesn't erase personal data or reset your HP laptop.
Your HP® laptop keeps freezing, crashing, or refusing to start normally. You've restarted it twice, and Windows still isn't getting the message. This is where Safe Mode can help.
At Asurion, we use Safe Mode to narrow down Windows problems without jumping straight to a reset. It starts your laptop with only the essentials, making it easier to figure out whether an app, driver, or Windows itself is causing trouble. Here's how to get there.
How to start an HP laptop in Safe Mode on Windows 11
If your HP laptop still reaches the Windows desktop, this is the easiest way to enter Safe Mode.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- When the recovery menu appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings.
- Select Restart.
- Press F4 for Safe Mode, F5 for Safe Mode with Networking, or F6 for Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
Windows will restart with a limited set of drivers and services. The desktop may look different, and some features won't be available until you restart normally.

How to enter Safe Mode if you can't sign in
A forgotten password or a Windows problem doesn't necessarily mean you're locked out of the recovery menu. You can reach Safe Mode directly from the sign-in screen.
- On the Windows sign-in screen, select the Power icon.
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press F4 or F5, depending on whether you need network access.
You'll still need to sign in with an authorized Windows account. Safe Mode doesn't bypass your password or other account security.
How to start Safe Mode when your HP laptop won't boot
If Windows repeatedly fails to start, it may open the Windows Recovery Environment automatically.
When the Automatic Repair screen appears, select Advanced options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Then press F4 to enter Safe Mode.
If recovery doesn't open automatically, a Windows recovery USB may be needed. On some systems, pressing F11 during startup can open HP's recovery options, but availability depends on the model and recovery configuration.
Avoid repeatedly forcing the laptop off during startup unless you're following a specific recovery procedure. Interrupting Windows updates or disk activity can cause additional problems.
What to do once your HP laptop is in Safe Mode
Safe Mode is useful because it helps narrow down what's causing trouble. If your laptop runs normally here but freezes or crashes during a regular startup, we'd look at recently installed apps, drivers, or startup programs.
A few things worth checking:
- Uninstall an app that started causing problems after installation.
- Roll back a driver if the issue began after an update.
- Check Device Manager for hardware or driver errors.
- Run a malware scan using available Windows security tools.
- Back up important files if the laptop has been unstable.
Safe Mode won't repair every issue on its own. If the laptop still crashes with only essential drivers running, Windows system files or hardware may need closer attention.
How to exit Safe Mode on an HP laptop
In most cases, leaving Safe Mode is as simple as restarting the laptop through Start > Power > Restart.
If Windows keeps starting in Safe Mode, check whether it was enabled through System Configuration:
- Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- Open the Boot tab.
- If Safe boot is selected, clear the checkbox.
- Select Apply > OK, then restart.
Only change this setting if Safe Mode was configured through System Configuration. The normal Windows Recovery method doesn't require you to turn Safe Mode off manually.
If you've tried these steps and still need a little help, we're right around the corner. Schedule a repair at the nearest uBreakiFix® by Asurion store and our certified experts can get your device back up and running as soon as the same day.
