Asurion Experts help people get the most out of their everyday devices. Here's our guide to using Double Tap for Apple Watch.
Which Apple Watch models support Double Tap?
Double Tap isn't available on every Apple Watch model. So far, only these devices come with this feature:
- Apple Watch Series 9, 10, and 11
- Apple Watch Ultra 2 and 3
- Apple Watch SE 3
Your device will also need to run watchOS 10.1 or later.
Older models can use AssistiveTouch as a similar gesture option. It gives you hands-free Apple Watch control with gestures like tapping and clenching your fist.

There are two ways to enable Apple Watch Double Tap gestures. Here's how to turn it on using the watch itself:

What you can do with Double Tap
The Double Tap gesture for Apple Watch controls all sorts of everyday actions, including:
- Silencing your Apple Watch
- Answering and ending calls
- Playing, pausing, and skipping media
- Opening and scrolling through the Smart Stack
- Viewing notifications
- Responding to messages
- Stopping or snoozing timers and alarms
Is Double Tap not responding the way you expect?
You're tapping your fingers together, but your watch doesn't do anything. What gives?
An outdated version of watchOS is a common culprit. If you haven't updated your software in a while, it might not detect your gestures. Here's how to check for pending updates:
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch> General.
- Tap Software Update.
- If there's an available update, tap it to start the download. You may need to enter your Apple Watch passcode.
Double Tap also won't work if your watch is in Low Power Mode. Plug it into the charger and try again later.
Make sure your watch is fitted correctly, too. It should be facing up and fit snugly against your wrist without being uncomfortable.
In some cases, Double Tap could also conflict with AssistiveTouch. This could mean that your watch doesn't recognize tapping at all or triggers actions at random times. Try disabling other accessibility features to see if Double Tap starts working correctly.
Follow these steps to adjust your Apple Watch gestures settings:
- Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
- Tap Accessibility> AssistiveTouch.
- Toggle off this feature.
If none of these troubleshooting tips work, try unpairing your Apple Watch and syncing it again. Sometimes, a quick reset is all it takes to clear out minor software glitches.
