Try another stream first

Open a different live channel for a minute or two. If the second stream plays normally, don’t restart the entire home network yet. Twitch notes that streams can behave differently depending on the broadcaster’s setup, video configuration, browser compatibility, and what playback options are available for that channel.

If several unrelated streams all buffer, the problem is much more likely to be on the viewing device or network.

Set Twitch video quality to Auto

Open the player settings and choose Quality > Auto.

Auto lets Twitch adjust playback quality as the available connection changes instead of trying to hold a resolution the network can’t consistently deliver. If it still buffers, drop the resolution manually for a few minutes and compare. A lower-quality stream that suddenly plays smoothly is a useful clue: the connection can move video, just not reliably at the previous quality.

If every stream buffers, work on the connection

Start with the viewing device close to the router, or connect it by Ethernet if that’s an option. Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, and another 4K stream running in the next room.

Then restart the modem and router:

1. Unplug them from power for about 30 seconds.
2. Plug the modem back in first.
3. Wait for its internet connection to return.
4. Reconnect the router.
5. Try Twitch again once Wi-Fi is fully back.

If other streaming apps and websites are slow too, Twitch probably isn’t the main problem.

Browser-only buffering points back to the browser

If Twitch works on a phone or TV but struggles in one computer browser, stay on that computer.

• Update the browser first. Twitch also recommends temporarily disabling extensions—including ad blockers that can interfere with playback—or opening Twitch in an incognito/private window with extensions disabled.
• Turn off a VPN as a test, too. If the same stream works in another browser or after extensions are disabled, changing router settings won’t buy you much.

One stream can be the stream, not you

Twitch receives streams with different broadcaster settings, and not every channel behaves the same way on every device or browser. If one streamer buffers while several others play normally, the broadcaster’s source or available playback options may be part of the problem.

Try Quality > Auto or a lower available resolution. If the channel offers no lower option and everything else on Twitch plays fine, there may not be much to fix on the home network. That’s a better answer than rebooting the router for the third time because one channel had a rough night.
