Why your Android update may not install

It's totally normal to worry when an Android update fails to install. After all, you want the latest features and security patches for your device. Thankfully, failed updates are usually caused by minor issues, such as:

  • Insufficient storage: A smartphone that lacks storage space can't download, save, and install an update. Most Android software updates require more space than their actual file size.
  • Unreliable connection: Updates perform best when your phone has a strong and stable internet connection. An unstable connection will interrupt the Android system update download and installation process.
  • Outdated Google Play Services app: Google Play Services facilitates updates. If your app is outdated, you may need to update it before you can install system updates.
  • Corrupted temporary files: Hardware issues or download interference can damage and corrupt update files. Clearing the Google Play™ Store and Google Play Services cache removes damaged temporary files so you can start the update process from scratch.
  • Unsupported Android device: Older Android phones may continue to receive security support, but may lack compatibility with major Android operating system (OS) updates.
  • Carrier/device rollout delays: Some Android smartphone manufacturers and telecommunication carriers adjust updates to fit their use requirements. This may prevent you from getting original Android updates when they're initially released.

Updates that fail because of an unstable connection may resume once the connection improves. Similarly, if your phone dies during the update, plugging it into a charger may be enough to restart the process.

Also, consider the update type. Older devices continue to receive Google Play Services and security updates until the manufacturer stops supporting them. However, new Android OS versions may only be available for select devices.

Fix an Android system update that keeps failing

A failed Android update is a cause for concern, but it doesn't have to sideline you from using your device. Try these solutions to see if they help:

  1. Make sure your smartphone is charged to at least 75% before attempting to install an update.
  2. Clear the cache of the Google Play Store. Open Settings, then tap Apps > Google Play Store > Storage. Tap Clear Cache > Clear Data. Repeat the process for the Google Play Services app.
  3. Open Settings > Storage to check your storage space. If less than two gigabytes is available, delete files, apps, or other data to make room for the update.
  4. Retry the update manually. Open Settings > System > Software updates. Follow the prompts to install the update.
  5. Check with your phone's manufacturer or your carrier if you don't see an expected update. There may be a delay while they tweak the update to optimize its performance for your device.
  6. Restart your device in Safe mode to diagnose third-party conflicts that interfere with updates. Open Quick Settings and tap Power. Tap and hold Power off until the Reboot to safe mode message appears.

FAQ

Why does my Android update keep failing?

The most common causes are low storage, a weak internet connection, outdated Google Play Services, corrupted update files, or temporary software glitches.

How much storage do I need for an Android update?

It varies by device, but having at least 2 GB of free storage is a good starting point for most system updates.

Can I force an Android update to install?

You can manually check for updates by opening Settings > System > Software update. If no update appears, your device may not be eligible yet, or your carrier may still be rolling it out.

Why is my phone saying my software is up to date when I know there's a new Android version?

Android updates are often released in stages. Your phone manufacturer or carrier may delay the update while optimizing it for your specific device.

Will I lose my data if an Android update fails?

Usually not. Most failed updates don't affect your personal files, but it's always a good idea to back up your device before installing major software updates.
