You say, “Alexa, call Mom,” and instead of ringing, Alexa tells you the contact isn’t available—or calls someone entirely different. Calling is convenient when it works, but the fix depends a lot on which Alexa communication feature you’re actually using.

Identify which Alexa calling feature is failing

Alexa communication includes a few different options:

• Drop In opens an approved intercom-style connection.
• Announcements broadcast a one-way message to Echo devices.

Make sure Alexa Communication is set up

Open the Amazon Alexa app and go to More > Communicate. Complete any prompts to verify your mobile number, profile, or permissions.

If you changed phone numbers, phones, or Amazon accounts recently, make sure Alexa isn’t still tied to old information.

Try placing the call from the Alexa app too. If that fails as well, focus on the account and permissions rather than the Echo speaker.

Give Alexa access to your contacts

Check the phone’s settings and make sure the Amazon Alexa app can access contacts. Then review the person’s contact card for an old number, duplicate entry, or similar name.

If you have multiple Jordans in your contacts, use the full name while testing. Alexa appreciates a little specificity.

Check what Alexa heard

If Alexa calls the wrong person or says it can’t find the contact, review recent voice history in More > Alexa Privacy > Review Voice History.

Check Wi-Fi and Do Not Disturb

Test another contact

Call someone else, then ask the original contact to call back. If every contact fails, focus on your account and Alexa setup. If only one person fails, check that contact’s number, permissions, and Alexa setup.

Reset the Echo only if calling problems show up alongside broader microphone, account, or connection issues. Most calling problems live in settings and permissions—not in the speaker hardware.
