Are AirPods waterproof?
AirPods® provide a wireless listening experience during solo activities, like workouts and lengthy commutes. But if you've ever exposed them to moisture, you might wonder if they're waterproof.
Asurion Experts answer your pressing tech questions. Whether you're wondering why only one AirPod is working or what to do when they stop charging, we have a solution. So, are AirPods waterproof? The short answer: No. But some models are water-resistant, and a wet AirPod isn't always a lost cause. Here's what to know.
Which AirPods are water and sweat-resistant?
Apple AirPods3, AirPods 4, and all AirPods Pro models are sweat and water resistant, but not waterproof. That means you can use them for non-water related activities. However, you can't submerge your AirPods in water. If too much moisture touches them, they may stop working.
What can and can't you do with water-resistant AirPods?
Apple AirPods aren't waterproof, but you can use them during activities that involve minimal water or sweating. For example, wearing AirPods during your daily gym session or while walking outside in light rain won't hurt them. But using them during activities that involve a lot of water, such as swimming or showering, is a no-go.
Even though most AirPods come with some level of water resistance, that doesn't make them completely immune to moisture. A few droplets won't hurt, but lots of water will. Keep your AirPods dry and remove them before engaging in water sports. Make a habit of putting them back in their case after use, so there's less risk of spilling something on them.
What to do if your AirPods get wet
Wet AirPods might alarm you, but hold off from throwing them in the trash can just yet. While your Apple earbuds aren't waterproof, it may be possible to get them working again. Try these steps to see if they resolve your issue.
- Remove your AirPods from the water source.
- Dry the AirPods with a clean microfiber cloth.
- Lay the AirPods on a flat surface, like a table.
- Wait at least 24 hours before trying to use them.
Never put wet AirPods back in their case. Doing so may damage the case and prevent them from thoroughly drying.
How to tell if your AirPods have water damage
A quick look at your AirPods probably isn't enough to determine whether they're water-damaged. Instead, you'll need to try using them after they've fully dried out.
Once you're satisfied they're dry, put them in your ears and play some music or a podcast. Water-damaged AirPods won't play at full volume. If you hear any sound at all, it may be very quiet. The AirPods microphone may also stop working.
You can continue drying the AirPods or clean them thoroughly to see if that helps. But if it's been longer than a day and they still don't work as expected, you may need to replace them.
Why a protection plan might be worth considering
Water damage isn't always avoidable, even if you're extra careful. There's always a chance you'll spill a drink on your AirPods or drop one in the toilet (worst case).

FAQs
What happens if my AirPods get wet?
You may notice a dip in sound quality, or they may stop working altogether. Let them completely dry and clean them off with a lint-free cloth to see if that helps.
Can I use AirPods in the shower?
AirPods aren't waterproof, so you should never use them in the shower.
How long can AirPods be submerged in water?
There's no hard and fast rule on when AirPods stop working after exposure to water. If you accidentally drop them somewhere with lots of water, remove them immediately and dry them off. They may work again once dried.
Are AirPods water resistant?
AirPods 3, 4, and Pro are water resistant. However, AirPods 1st and 2nd generation are not. While a little moisture won't likely hurt your earbuds, submersion in liquid might. Be very cautious when using AirPods near water.
