How dual SIM and eSIM technology works
All cell phones use a physical SIM or eSIM to connect to a carrier's network. The physical SIM is a small chip that slips into your device. It's removable, so if you take it out, you lose the connection with your provider.
An eSIM is an electronic version of a physical SIM. There is no card or chip to insert. Instead, you follow your carrier's instructions to download the eSIM and activate it.
Phones that support two phone numbers fall into one of these categories:
- They have space for two physical SIM cards.
- They lack a physical SIM slot, but support multiple eSIMs.
- They have space for a physical SIM and an eSIM.
Most devices use Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) to manage two phone numbers. With DSDS, both numbers remain active when you're not using your device, so you can receive calls on both lines. But when you're on the phone, any calls made to the other line go to voicemail.

Which iPhones and Android phones support two numbers?
Support for two phone numbers on one phone varies by manufacturer, model, region, and carrier.
Generally, newer iPhones® support dual SIMs. For example, U.S. models of the iPhone 11 contain a physical SIM slot and space for an eSIM. Starting with the iPhone 14, Apple® phased out the physical SIM slot, so devices support multiple eSIMs.
In the Android™ ecosystem, U.S. Samsung Galaxy® phones manufactured after 2022 offer dual SIM. Some devices contain two SIM slots, while others have a single SIM slot plus support for an eSIM. The Google Pixel™ follows a similar approach, with the Pixel 7 and later offering dual eSIM.
Common dual SIM setup issues and limitations
You've done the research, and your phone supports dual SIMs. But to use dual SIM cards on Android or iPhone devices, you'll need to meet a few eligibility requirements. Potential roadblocks include:
- A locked phone: U.S. carriers may stop you from using a second SIM if you're under a contract, have an outstanding installment balance, or haven't paid off your device. To unlock your phone from a carrier, reach out to their support team.
- Carrier restrictions: Some carriers actively restrict dual SIM use. For example, Xfinity® blocks customers from using another U.S. carrier SIM in most cases, but it does support dual SIM if you're traveling internationally. https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/what-are-sims-how-do-they-work
- Employer policies: If your business provides you with a phone, corporate rules may block dual SIM use.
When setting up an eSIM for the first time, pay close attention to the provider's instructions. Improper setup can cause activation to fail, and the only solution is to request another eSIM from the carrier.
