How to connect keyboard and mouse to Xbox

Xbox Keyboard and Mouse

You recently bought a game for your Xbox® that you normally play on your PC. You've mastered all the keyboard and mouse shortcuts to navigate each level, and switching to the Xbox controller is a bit of a learning curve. Can you use a keyboard and mouse on Xbox?

Many Asurion Experts are gamers, and we know how important your setup is. Whether you're experiencing common Xbox issues or need help with Xbox Live™, you can count on us for a solution. In just a few steps, you can get started using an Xbox keyboard and mouse.

Wired keyboard and mouse connection

The Xbox is compatible with virtually any wired keyboard and mouse set. As long as it has a working USB that fits in the Xbox port, you can attach it to your gaming system.

All Xbox consoles come with three USB ports. Two are on the back of the console, and one is on the front or the left side, depending on which Xbox you have. Take these steps to connect your keyboard and mouse:

  1. Plug the keyboard into an available USB port on your console.
  2. Plug the mouse into another USB port on your console.
  3. Test the connection in the Xbox menu or with a supported game.

That's it! Using wired devices shouldn't require any additional setup or configuration with your console.

Wireless keyboard and mouse connection

A wireless keyboard and mouse set gives you a little more flexibility. You're not tethered to a short cord that limits how far you can be from the console.

To install your wireless keyboard and mouse, follow these steps.

  1. Plug the USB dongle for the keyboard into an available USB port on your console.
  2. Plug the USB dongle for the mouse into an available USB port on your console.
  3. Turn on the mouse and keyboard.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to pair your devices.

Some wireless keyboard and mouse sets may start working automatically, with no need for pairing. Once you're satisfied with the connection, test it out on the Xbox menu or a supported game.

Can you use a mouse and keyboard on Xbox: Bluetooth-enabled devices

Xbox provides built-in support for its proprietary external devices, including the Xbox Wireless Controller and Xbox Wireless Headset. However, it doesn't provide a Bluetooth® connection for third-party keyboards or mice. Use a wired or wireless setup with USB plugs if you want to game using a keyboard or mouse.

Compatible games and common uses

Numerous games include at least some functionality for a keyboard and mouse with the Xbox. The setup works well for certain tasks, such as menu navigation, messaging, and some game actions. Some Xbox games that work with a keyboard and mouse include:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3®
  • Diablo® IV
  • Fortnite®
  • Minecraft®
  • Planet Coaster® 2
  • The Sims™ 4

Most video game developers include a list of supported devices on the game's packaging. For in-depth compatibility details, you can also check the company's website.

Troubleshooting connection issues

A faulty cable can easily derail the connection on a wired keyboard or mouse. Inspect both cables carefully for signs of damage. Cuts in the plastic cord cabling or exposed wires indicate a bad component.

Inspect the USB plugs for damage, too. Bent pins, water damage, or general wear and tear can prevent a proper connection between the USB and the Xbox.

Look closely at the Xbox's USB ports. Sometimes, dust and grime can make their way inside the port. Use a can of compressed air to push out any dirt buildup before retrying your connection.

Double-check that each wireless device has working batteries, and replace them if necessary. If you continue to have problems, get real-time tech support from online Asurion Experts.

FAQ

Do I need an adapter to use Bluetooth devices with Xbox?

Plugging a Bluetooth adapter into your Xbox may allow you to use the console with a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse. However, verify the adapter's compatibility with the Xbox. Most manufacturers print device compatibility on the adapter packaging.

Why isn't my keyboard or mouse working on Xbox?

Some Xbox games have limited (or no) functionality with a keyboard and mouse. Check the game's packaging to verify its compatibility. Also, assess the connection and make sure the USB plug or dongle fits snugly in the port.

Is using a keyboard and mouse on Xbox allowed in online games?

It depends on the game. Some support keyboard and mouse setups, while others don't. If you plan on using the keyboard and mouse for online coop games or competitions, check the rules of your platform before using the setup.
