Echo Dot keeps disconnecting from Wi-Fi? Try these 7 fixes
⚡ Fast fix
- Check what else drops—If your phone or laptop loses Wi-Fi too, the problem is probably your network.
- Restart both devices—Reboot the Echo Dot and router before changing anything bigger.
- Test the location—If the disconnects stop closer to the router, weak signal is likely involved.
- Still disconnecting? Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.
An Echo Dot® that disconnects once is annoying. An Echo Dot that reconnects just long enough to play half a song before dropping offline again starts to feel personal.
Intermittent Wi-Fi problems take a little more detective work than a device that never connects at all, but usually it's easier to diagnose once you answer one question: Is the Wi-Fi unstable everywhere, or just at the Echo Dot?
1. See whether other devices lose Wi-Fi too
The next time Alexa drops offline, check your phone or laptop.
If they’re struggling too, focus on the router or internet connection. If everything else stays online, the Echo Dot itself—or its location—is the better place to look.
Our guide to fixing Alexa when it won’t connect to the internet can help if the problem seems bigger than one device.
If your other devices stay connected, keep going—the next fixes are focused on the Echo Dot itself.
2. Restart your Echo Dot and router
Unplug your Echo Dot for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Restart the router too and wait until Wi-Fi is fully back before testing Alexa again.
Temporary connection glitches happen, and a restart clears a surprising number of them.
3. Move the Echo Dot closer to the router
If the disconnects stop when the Echo Dot is closer to the router, you’ve probably found the issue.
Walls, floors, distance, and even where the speaker sits can weaken the signal. You don’t have to leave it beside the router forever—this is just a quick test.

4. Reconnect the Echo Dot to Wi-Fi
If the signal seems fine but the Echo Dot still drops offline, refresh its saved connection.
Open the Amazon Alexa app, go to your Echo Dot’s device settings, and update its Wi-Fi connection. If needed, hold the Action button until the light turns orange, then follow the setup prompts in the app.
5. Check where your router is sitting
A router hidden in a cabinet, tucked behind a TV, or sitting at one end of the house can create weak spots.
If other devices also struggle in the same room as the Echo Dot, the Wi-Fi coverage may be the real issue.
6. Look for network congestion
If the Echo Dot disconnects more often when everyone is streaming, gaming, or using connected devices, your network may be crowded.
You don’t need to start kicking devices off Wi-Fi. Just notice the pattern. If busy times line up with the dropouts, that’s useful information.
7. Make sure Alexa and your Echo software are up to date
Update the Amazon Alexa app on your phone. Echo devices usually update themselves automatically when they’re online, so keep the Echo Dot plugged in and connected long enough to catch up.

FAQ
Why does my Echo Dot keep going offline?
Usually, it’s Wi-Fi signal strength, router stability, or a connection issue on the Echo itself. Check whether other devices drop at the same time first.
Will moving my Echo Dot closer to the router help?
Absolutely. If the disconnects stop, weak signal strength was likely the problem.
Should I reset my Echo Dot if it keeps disconnecting?
Nope—not right away. Restart it, check the signal, and reconnect it to Wi-Fi first.
Why does only one Echo Dot keep disconnecting?
If everything else stays online, the issue is more likely the Echo Dot’s location, saved Wi-Fi connection, or the device itself.
Can too many devices on Wi-Fi make Alexa disconnect?
Yes. A crowded or unstable network can contribute, especially if the dropouts happen when lots of devices are active.
