Fire TV black screen? Here’s how to get the picture back

A black Fire TV™ screen doesn't give you much to work with. No error message, no helpful warning—just a TV that's on and a picture that isn't.

Make sure you're on the right HDMI input

It sounds basic, but we'd check this before touching a single Fire TV setting. TVs with several HDMI ports make it surprisingly easy to end up on HDMI 2 while the Fire TV is sitting happily over on HDMI 1.

Use the TV remote to cycle through the inputs and give each one a few seconds to load. If the Fire TV home screen appears, you're done. No deeper troubleshooting required.

If the TV recognizes the Fire TV input but still doesn't display a picture, keep going.

Give Fire TV a fresh start

If the screen went black while you were already watching something, we'd be more suspicious of a temporary glitch than the wrong input. Unplug the Fire TV from power for about 60 seconds, then reconnect it and wait for the device to boot. If you're using a Fire TV Stick, power it with its compatible wall adapter rather than relying on a TV USB port that may not provide enough consistent power.

Check the HDMI connection

Disconnect the Fire TV from its HDMI port and reconnect it firmly. If another HDMI port is available, try that too. For setups that run through a soundbar, receiver, HDMI switch, or splitter, temporarily connect the Fire TV directly to the television.

That removes a lot of middlemen at once. If the picture comes back, add the other equipment back one piece at a time until you find what's interrupting the signal.

Check the power connection

A Fire TV can sometimes receive enough power to look like it's starting without getting enough to work reliably.

Make sure the power cable is firmly connected at both ends and use the power adapter designed for the device whenever possible. If you have another compatible cable or adapter available, swapping it in is a quick way to rule out a failing power accessory.

Black screen in only one app?

That's an important distinction. If the Fire TV menus look perfectly normal but Netflix, Prime Video, or another app turns black when you open it, we'd leave the HDMI cables alone.

Start with the app instead:

• Force stop it.
• Clear its cache.
• Restart Fire TV.
• Check for an app update.

If other apps play normally, you've already got a strong clue that the Fire TV display itself isn't the problem.

Check for a resolution problem

A black screen that started after connecting the Fire TV to a different television or changing display equipment can point to a video resolution the TV isn't handling correctly.

On compatible Fire TV remotes, press and hold Up on the navigation ring and Rewind together for about 5 seconds. Fire TV should cycle through available resolutions. When the picture appears correctly, select the resolution that works.

Give each option time to display before moving on. The goal is to find the resolution your television and Fire TV can agree on, not speed-run every setting.

Update Fire TV once the picture is back

If the black screen was intermittent rather than constant, check for software updates after you've restored the picture. Open Settings > My Fire TV (or Device & Software) > About > Check for Updates and install anything available.

When the TV itself may be the problem

If possible, connect the Fire TV to another television or monitor. You can also test another HDMI device—like a game console—on the original TV.

Those two tests can save a lot of guessing:

• Fire TV works on another TV: Focus on the original television or its HDMI ports.
• Other HDMI devices work on the original TV: The Fire TV or its power equipment becomes more suspicious.
• Nothing works through that HDMI port: The port itself may be the problem.

At that point, you know which device deserves the attention instead of resetting everything in sight.

Why is my Fire TV on but the screen is black?

Check the TV input, restart Fire TV, and reseat the HDMI connection first. Power or resolution problems can also cause a blank screen.

Why does my Fire TV show a black screen but still have sound?

If you can hear audio, the Fire TV is running. Focus on the HDMI connection, display resolution, and television rather than power.

Why does the screen go black only when I open an app?

If Fire TV menus still appear normally, the problem is more likely with that app. Force stop it, clear its cache, and check for updates.

Can an HDMI port cause a Fire TV black screen?
