6 ways to fix Fire TV remote buttons that aren’t working

You press Home on your Amazon Fire® TV remote. Nothing. Then Back. Still nothing. By the third button, it’s pretty clear the remote has stopped cooperating.

1. Test a handful of buttons

Try Home, Back, the navigation ring, Play/Pause, and the volume controls if your remote has them.

If most of the remote works but one or two buttons don’t, focus on those physical buttons first. If nearly everything is unresponsive, batteries and pairing deserve your attention before cleaning individual keys.

2. Replace both batteries

Put in two fresh, matching batteries and check that they’re facing the right direction.

Low batteries don’t always make a remote stop working all at once. Sometimes you get lag, missed presses, or buttons that seem inconsistent before the remote gives up entirely.

3. Clean buttons that feel sticky

Use a dry microfiber cloth over the remote and a dry cotton swab around any button that feels sluggish or doesn’t spring back normally. Press the button several times after cleaning to see whether movement improves.

Skip sprays and wet cleaners. A little surface grime is fixable; liquid inside the remote is a much bigger problem.

4. Restart Fire TV and pair the remote again

If several buttons are unresponsive—or the remote disconnects entirely—restart Fire TV before doing more.

Unplug Fire TV for about a minute, reconnect it, and wait for it to finish starting. Then hold the remote’s Home button for about 10 seconds while you’re nearby.

5. Use your phone as a test remote

Open the Amazon Fire TV app on a phone connected to the same Wi-Fi network and try controlling Fire TV from there.

If the phone works normally, the streaming device is clearly responding to commands. That keeps the troubleshooting focused on the physical remote instead of Fire TV itself.

6. Replace the remote if the problem follows it

If certain buttons still don’t work after fresh batteries, cleaning, restart, and pairing—and the phone app controls Fire TV without a problem—the remote itself may be worn out or damaged.
