How to fix AirPod case that won't charge
A few hours ago, you popped your Apple® AirPods® into their charging case. Now you need them for a phone call, but when you put them on, they don't work. There's no sound and no connection to your iPhone®. Is something wrong with the case?
Asurion Experts keep your devices running smoothly. Whether we're explaining the process for resetting AirPods or what to do if the AirPods microphone stops working, we have a solution.
What to do if your AirPod case is not charging
Why is your AirPod case not charging? You may experience problems charging your AirPods if the case is dirty or isn't receiving adequate power. Damaged cables and non-updated firmware can also interfere with charging performance.
Inspect the charging cable and verify functionality
A damaged Lightning® cable can prevent AirPods from charging in their case. These thin, flexible cables attach between the case and a wall outlet, and it's not uncommon for their interior wires to snap or twist over time. Look closely at the charging cable you normally use and check for visible damage, such as fraying or small cuts in the plastic cover. If you see any damage, it may be time to replace the cable.
You can check the cable's functionality by plugging it into another compatible device. If the device works with the cable attached, then it's probably not the cause of your charging issue.
Test the electrical outlet with another device
A non-working wall outlet can't charge your AirPods case. Try switching to another power outlet to see if that resolves the issue.
You can also try charging the AirPods through your computer's USB port. Confirm you've turned the computer on before attempting to charge your AirPods.
Clean the AirPods and case charging port
AirPods accumulate oils and dust that can prevent them from charging. Thoroughly cleaning your AirPods and case can remove dust that's causing charging issues.
Wipe the stems and body of the AirPods with a lightly dampened, lint-free cloth. Place them in a spot with good airflow and allow them to dry for at least two hours.
How do you clean your AirPod case charging port safely? Find a small toothbrush with soft bristles and gently rub it in the charging port area. Don't use the toothbrush on the inside of the case. Instead, take a dry cloth to lightly clean the case's interior. You can put a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on the cloth to kill germs and bacteria.
Inspect and clean the connectors for debris
Look closely at the connectors in your AirPods case. Use a magnifying glass or your iPhone's zoom photo function to inspect the area. If you spot any dirt, swipe a Q-Tip gently along the connectors.
If you'd rather not touch the connectors, blow out the dirt with a can of compressed air.
Update the AirPods firmware
Apple® distributes automatic firmware updates for the entire AirPods and AirPods Pro® product line. However, you might not have the latest version, especially if you rely solely on a data connection rather than Wi-Fi for everyday usage.
To check your current AirPods firmware version on your iPhone, follow these steps.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Tap the Information icon.
- Compare the firmware version installed on your phone with Apple's list of the latest AirPods firmware versions.
If your regular or AirPod Pro case is not charging because it requires a firmware update, take these steps to receive this automatically from Apple:
- Confirm you have the latest iOS™ on your iPhone. Turn on Bluetooth through Settings.
- Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Connect your charging case to a power source.
- Place the AirPods in the charging case and close the lid. Keep the iPhone and AirPods within a few feet of each other.
- Allow at least 30 minutes for the AirPods to receive and install the update.
- Re-check the firmware version to confirm you now have the latest updates
