How to fix PlayStation 5 network connectivity issues

You're an hour into an enthralling gaming session on your PlayStation® when it happens: the connection drops. No longer are you battling the enemy in a shooter game. Instead, you're staring at a very annoying error message. What gives?

Asurion Experts fix your toughest device issues. Whether you need to clear the cache on your PS5™ or want to stop it from freezing and crashing, we have a solution. Here's how to fix PS5 network connectivity issues so you can get back to your game.

Common fixes to resolve PS5 network issues

Network issues rank among the most common PS5 problems. Your device requires a stable internet connection to stream content or download games. Without one, you'll run into connectivity issues.

Start the troubleshooting process by checking if your other devices have an active Wi-Fi connection. If you can't use them to surf the internet or stream content, there may be a local outage, or you could have a router issue.

Unplug the router and let it sit for 30 seconds. Plug it back in and wait a few minutes for it to power up. A restart clears out temporary glitches that interfere with your connection.

Restart your devices to reset the connection

When you're satisfied you have a stable internet connection, restart your PS5 to reset its internet connection. Turn it off and wait for at least 30 seconds, then turn it back on. A simple restart may be all you need to fix the issue.

Review your PS5 network settings and NAT type

If your PS5 still won't connect to Wi-Fi, run a test to check its connection status.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click Network > Test Internet Connection.
  3. Wait for the test to complete.

The test results display the current upload and download speeds, IP address, and ping. You'll also see the NAT type, which refers to the security level of your connection. Type 1 means you have an open connection, while Type 3 is very strict. If you have a Type 3 connection, you may experience drops when playing online multiplayer games through your PS5.

To adjust to a less restrictive NAT type, you'll need to adjust your router settings. Consult your router's user manual for guidance on enabling Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). That setting lets you switch to a lower NAT type when playing online games with your PS5. [https://www.cyberghostvpn.com/privacyhub/check-nat-type-ps5/]

Change DNS settings or use a wired connection

Updating your DNS settings from the PS5 defaults may be necessary, especially if you're far from the nearest PS5 server. Switching to a different DNS can improve the stability of your connection.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
  3. Click the name of your Wi-Fi network.
  4. Press the Options button on your PS5 controller. Click Advanced Settings.
  5. Click DNS Settings.
  6. Update Primary DNS to 8.8.8.8, and Secondary DNS to 8.8.4.4. Click OK to confirm your changes.

Alternatively, connect an Ethernet cable directly from the router to the PS5. Make sure to update your network settings to reflect the wired connection.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click Network > Settings.
  3. Click Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Manually.
  4. Click Use a LAN Cable.
  5. Click Done. [https://www.androidpolice.com/ps5-internet-connection-fixes/]

Look for system updates or known outages

Outdated software on your PS5 can cause problems with network connectivity. To check for updates, follow these steps.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
  3. Click Update System Software.

If there is no option to update, you have the latest software.

Occasionally, the PlayStation server may stop working. You can check its status directly through the PlayStation Network website.

FAQs

Why does my PlayStation network keep disconnecting?

Your router may have an overly strict NAT setting. Open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. If the results show a NAT type 3, consult your router's user manual for instructions on enabling the Universal Plug and Play setting.

Why is my PS5's internet connection so bad?

You may be too far from the router to maintain a stable internet connection. Try moving the router closer to your device.

How to improve the network connection on PS5?

A wired connection may provide a better network connection than Wi-Fi. Connect your PS5 directly to the router with an Ethernet cable to see if that resolves your connection problems.
