Gmail notifications stopped working on Android? Here's why

⚡ Fast fix
- Open Gmail. If new emails appear only after you open the app, you're probably dealing with a sync issue.
- Check Gmail notifications. Make sure alerts are turned on inside the Gmail app.
- Power Saver on? It can pause Gmail syncing and stop notifications.
- Switched networks? Close and reopen Gmail to refresh syncing.
If Gmail notifications suddenly stop showing up on your Android™ phone, it's easy to think the app is broken. In reality, Gmail notifications depend on several things working together—notification settings, background syncing, and Android's power management all play a part.
Asurion Experts troubleshoot Android notification issues every day, and we've found it's usually faster to narrow down where notifications are getting interrupted than to start changing every setting you can find. Here's where we'd start.
Why did Gmail notifications stop working on Android?
Most Gmail notification problems come down to one of three things: notification settings, battery management, or syncing.
Gmail itself is usually the simplest place to check because notification settings inside the app are responsible for many of the issues we see. After that, we turn our attention to Android features like Power Saver and Do Not Disturb, both of which can prevent notifications from showing up even though new emails are arriving normally.

Check Gmail notification settings
Before changing Android settings, open Gmail itself. If notifications are turned off in the app, Android never gets the chance to display them.
To check:
- Open Gmail.
- Tap the menu icon.
- Open Settings.
- Select your email account.
- Tap Notifications.
- Make sure they're turned on and set to All if you want alerts for every message.
If everything looks right there, it's also worth checking Android's notification settings to make sure Gmail notifications haven't been disabled at the system level.
Turn off Power Saver and check battery optimization
Power-saving features help extend battery life, but they can also limit how often Gmail syncs in the background. When syncing slows down, notifications usually do too.
We've found this is especially common after someone turns on Power Saver to conserve battery without realizing it changes how background apps behave. Battery optimization can have the same effect by delaying Gmail's push notifications.
If either setting is enabled, turn it off temporarily and see whether notifications start coming through again.
Make sure Do Not Disturb isn't enabled
Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one. If Do Not Disturb is turned on, Gmail can keep receiving new emails while silently hiding every notification.
Open Settings and check whether Do Not Disturb is enabled. If it is, either turn it off or adjust the exceptions so Gmail notifications are allowed.
Refresh Gmail after switching networks
We've noticed another pattern when phones move between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Sometimes Gmail doesn't immediately resume syncing after the network changes, which can delay notifications even though your connection looks perfectly fine.
Instead of changing more settings, try:
- Closing Gmail completely.
- Reopening the app.
- Waiting a minute to see if notifications return.
In many cases, that's enough to get Gmail syncing normally again.
When Gmail notifications still aren't working
If notifications still aren't coming through, the problem is probably bigger than a single setting.
At that point, it's worth restarting your phone and checking for Gmail and Android updates. If nothing changes, the issue may be tied to a software bug or a deeper sync problem that needs additional troubleshooting.

FAQ
Why did Gmail notifications suddenly stop working?
Most of the time it's a notification setting, battery optimization, or Do Not Disturb getting in the way.
Can Power Saver stop Gmail notifications?
Yes. It limits background syncing, which can delay or stop Gmail notifications.
Why do I only get Gmail notifications after opening the app?
That's usually a syncing problem. Battery optimization is one of the first things we'd check.
Does Do Not Disturb block Gmail notifications?
Yes. Unless Gmail is added as an exception, Do Not Disturb can silence alerts.
Why did Gmail notifications stop after switching Wi-Fi?
Sometimes Gmail needs a quick refresh after changing networks. Closing and reopening the app is often enough to get syncing back on track.
