💡 Need to know

  • No recharging: Apple AirTags rely on a replaceable CR2032 coin cell 3V battery for power.
  • Battery life: On average, a new AirTag lasts one year before needing a new battery.
  • Timely alerts: You'll receive a notification on your iPhone when the AirTag battery is low.

You love the convenience of your Apple® AirTag®. When it's attached to your keys, you never have to worry about losing them—a quick glance at your iPhone® shows you exactly where they are. But lately, you have questions about the AirTag's battery life. You're not sure how to charge the AirTag, or what to do when it runs out of power.

Asurion Experts help you get the most out of your favorite tech devices. Whether you're wondering how AirTags work or need to reset your AirTag, we've got answers. Here's how to check your AirTag's battery level, plus what to do when it gets low.

Do AirTags need to be charged?

Most Apple devices run on rechargeable batteries. The iPhone, iPad®, and Apple Watch® all include a charger you can use to refresh the battery whenever your device gets low on power. But the AirTag is different. It has no charging port and runs on an everyday CR2032 lithium coin 3V battery.

If you're a new Apple AirTag owner, this fact may surprise you. How will you know when it's time to replace the battery? Will it just run out of juice one day, like a usual wristwatch?

No—Apple has several mechanisms you can use to assess the battery level and know when it's time to replace it. And when it comes time to buy a new battery, you can find alternatives at your local drug or electronics store. You don't have to purchase from Apple.

How to check your AirTag battery level

When your AirTag is connected to your iPhone, you'll receive a notification when its battery gets low. But if you're someone who receives dozens of notifications each day, it's easy to overlook the alert. That's where knowing how to manually check the battery level comes in handy.

  1. Open the Find My® app.
  2. Tap Items.
  3. Tap the name of the AirTag you want to check.
  4. View the battery level.

If you see a Low Battery message underneath the AirTag's name, it's time to buy a replacement.

Swap your old battery for a new one

You've checked the AirTag's status, and you need a battery refresh. Unfortunately, trying to charge it with your Apple Watch charger or similar device won't work. Don't worry—changing the battery is easy.

Start by purchasing a new CR2032 lithium 3V coin battery from a local store or online. Most batteries are inexpensive, and some come in sets of four, eight, or nine, which gives you extras to keep on hand.

It's common for batteries to include a bitterant coating that discourages kids and animals from accidentally ingesting the battery. Know that batteries with a bitterant coating may not work with the AirTag. To avoid any purchase mistakes, look for batteries that include a "Compatible with Apple AirTag" message on the packaging.

To change the AirTag battery with a replacement one, take these steps:

  • Press the battery cover of your AirTag and rotate it counterclockwise until it stops.
  • Remove the battery cover and the old battery.
  • Insert the new battery with the positive side facing up.
  • Replace the AirTag cover. Match the three tabs on the cover with the slots on the AirTag.
  • Rotate the battery cover clockwise until it stops.

Dispose of the old battery safely—don't throw it in your household trash. It likely contains lithium, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers hazardous waste. Take it to a local retail store, such as Staples or Home Depot, that offers a drop-off recycling bin for old batteries. Before disposing of it, place it in a plastic bag and cover both sides with electrical tape to safeguard against fires.

How long does an AirTag battery last?

When you buy an AirTag from Apple, the battery typically lasts up to one year. Replacement batteries can hold up for the same amount of time. However, the battery's quality and your usage habits can impact its lifespan.

For best results, buy replacement batteries manufactured by reputable brands. Purchasing generic or no-name brands can be cheaper, but they may not last as long. Also, avoid using an AirTag in extreme temperatures, as they can shorten battery life and damage internal components.
