How to clear cache on an HP laptop without deleting what you need

💡 Need to know
- There isn’t one giant cache—Windows, browsers, and individual apps all keep their own temporary data.
- Start with Temporary files—Windows can show what’s taking up space before anything gets deleted.
- Clear the problem cache, not every cache—Cached files are useful when they’re working normally.
- Running out of storage? Storage Sense can handle routine cleanup automatically.
“Clear the cache” sounds like one big housekeeping button, but Windows doesn’t really work that way. An HP® laptop can have temporary Windows files, browser caches, Microsoft Store cache, thumbnails, and app-specific cached data all sitting in different places.
At Asurion, we spend a lot of time helping people figure out what’s actually safe and useful to clear—and what’s better left alone. Clearing the right cache can free up storage or fix an app that keeps loading stale or corrupted files, but clearing everything constantly usually isn’t necessary. Here's where we'd start.
Start with Windows Temporary files
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Temporary files.
- Wait while Windows calculates what can be removed.
- Review the categories carefully.
- Select the files you want to remove.
- Choose Remove files.
Pay extra attention to anything involving Downloads or previous Windows installations. Those can be much more meaningful than an ordinary temporary cache.

Let Storage Sense handle routine cleanup
If the laptop keeps filling up with temporary files, Storage Sense can automate part of the job. Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense, turn it on, then choose when it should run and how long files should stay in the Recycle Bin before Windows removes them.
Downloads aren’t removed by default unless that behavior is specifically configured.
Clear the browser cache when websites are the problem
If the laptop itself feels fine but one website keeps showing an old image, broken layout, or weird loading behavior, the browser cache is a better target than Windows storage.
In Chrome, open the three-dot menu, choose Delete browsing data, select the time range and cached data you want removed, then confirm. Be careful when selecting cookies or site data. Clearing cookies can sign you out of websites and remove site preferences.
Reset the Microsoft Store cache when the Store acts stuck
- Press Windows + R.
- Type wsreset.exe.
- Select OK.
- Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close.
- Microsoft Store should open automatically.
That command is meant for the Store cache. It doesn’t wipe personal documents or reset the whole laptop.
Don’t expect cache clearing to solve every slow laptop
A bloated or corrupted cache can create problems, but a slow HP computer can also be short on storage, overloaded with startup apps, running hot, or simply running too many things at once.
If Windows Storage shows plenty of free space and clearing the relevant cache doesn’t change the problem, move on rather than repeating the cleanup. Our guide on how to speed up a slow HP laptop can help.

FAQ
What happens when I clear cache on an HP laptop?
Temporary cached files are removed and recreated as Windows, browsers, or apps need them again.
Will clearing cache delete my personal files?
Normally no, but review the Windows Temporary files categories before deleting anything and avoid selecting Downloads unless those files truly aren’t needed.
Will clearing browser cache log me out?
Clearing only cached files usually won’t, but clearing cookies and site data can sign you out.
How often should I clear my laptop cache?
There’s no need to clear it constantly. Do it when storage is tight, an app is misbehaving, or cached data appears stale or corrupted.
Does clearing cache make an HP laptop faster?
Sometimes, especially if temporary files are using a lot of storage. If the laptop stays slow, look at startup apps, system load, heat, and available drive space too.
