Person clearing the cache on a PS4 and PS5

You're deep into a game on your PlayStation® when you notice a lag. If your PS4™ or PS5™ is running slow, freezing during games, or having trouble connecting online, clearing the cache might help. This quick step can remove temporary files that build up over time and cause performance issues.

At Asurion, our experts help gamers troubleshoot problems like this every day. From fixing common problems on the PS5 to connecting your PS4 controller to your iPhone®, we have answers for all your tech care needs. Here’s how to clear the cache on your PS4 or PS5 and enjoy a problem-free gaming experience.

What does clearing the cache on your PlayStation do?

Similar to computers and laptops, the PlayStation has a cache that stores temporary files from your gaming activities. The cache lessens the workload of a PS5 and PS4 system, allowing it to easily access temporary files without digging into deeper storage. The result is a faster-performing PlayStation with fewer lags and disruptions.

However, the opposite can happen if the PlayStation's cache accumulates too many temporary files. If you start to notice performance declines during your gaming sessions, clearing the cache frees up storage space taken up by outdated and unnecessary files.

Will clearing the cache delete my saved games?

Clearing the PlayStation's cache won't delete your progress in any saved games. It only removes performance files used to speed up gameplay. But it doesn't delete the game itself.

Think of clearing the caches as similar to deleting cookies in your internet browser. You're not deleting anything important to your computer, such as applications or stored files. Deleting cookies frees up space to improve internet search load times. You're essentially performing a similar procedure when you clear a PlayStation cache.

How often should I clear the cache on my PlayStation?

It's good practice to clear a PlayStation's cache any time you notice performance lags. For frequent gamers, that might be weekly or monthly. After clearing the cache, you should notice a smoother gaming experience.

FAQ

What's the difference between clearing the cache and rebuilding the database?

Clearing the cache deletes temporary files that the PlayStation frequently accesses during gameplay. Over time, the cache may house a lot of unnecessary files, which contributes to lags and unexpected system crashes.

PlayStations use a database to store temporary files and content. However, the console's database can get cluttered as time goes by. That leads to game interruptions and decreased performance. Rebuilding the database allows the system to clear out unorganized files that cause errors when gaming.

What do I do if the option to clear the cache is missing?

An option to clear the cache isn't available on older PlayStations. If you have a PS4 or earlier, use a manual process to clear the device's cache. Simply power your console down, unplug it from the wall outlet, and wait at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in. Afterward, you can return to gameplay with a clear cache.

How do I know if my PlayStation cache needs to be cleared?

Signs that it may be time to clear a PlayStation's cache include:

  • Frequent performance lags
  • Glitches or freezes when gaming
  • Increased loading times
  • System instability or connectivity problems
  • Odd graphics and display issues

Clearing a PlayStation's cache is an easy way to maintain its peak performance. Consider making it a part of your regular routine if you frequently play games on your PS4 or PS5.

Can I clear the cache without unplugging my PS5 or PS4?

Clearing the cache of a PS4 requires unplugging the device from the power source. There are no alternatives that will allow you to clear the cache without completely unplugging it.

However, if you have a PS5, you can clear its cache through the options settings. The process doesn't require you to unplug the device, but you must turn it off. Once you've powered it down, follow these steps to clear the cache:

  1. Press the console's Power button for at least seven seconds until you hear a second beep.
  2. Connect the controller to the console using its USB cord.
  3. Press the PS button on the controller.
  4. Click Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
  5. Click Clear System Software Cache > OK
