How to set up Alexa for elderly parents

💡Need to know

  • Alexa can help elderly parents with reminders, hands-free calls, and simple voice control for everyday tasks.
  • An Echo Show can be easier for seniors to use because it adds captions, visual prompts, and on-screen confirmations.
  • Alexa can help families stay connected with calling, Drop In, and Alexa Emergency Assist, but Emergency Assist requires setup and a subscription.

Setting up Alexa™ for elderly parents can simplify daily tasks with hands-free calls, reminders, and voice control—but setup and Wi-Fi issues can sometimes slow things down. At Asurion, we help nearly 230 million customers with device setup and support. Here’s how to set up Alexa for seniors and where to find help if you run into issues.

Choose the right device and placement

An Amazon Echo® with a screen, like an Echo Show, can be helpful for seniors because it shows timers, visual confirmations, and captions (on supported devices). A speaker-only Echo is simpler and less distracting but may require more hands-on help later. Place the device where your parents spend the most time and where Alexa can clearly hear them. If Wi-Fi is spotty, use our guide on how to improve Wi-Fi signal at home before you continue.

Set up Alexa for elderly parents

Before visiting your parents, have their Wi-Fi password and Amazon account login ready. If they don't have an account, create one for them in advance.

  1. Download the Amazon Alexa app on a compatible phone or tablet.
  2. Plug in the Echo device and wait for it to enter setup mode.
  3. In the Alexa app, tap Devices > Add (+) > Add Device > Amazon Echo, then follow the prompts to connect to Wi-Fi.
  4. Test the setup by saying, “Alexa, what’s the weather?”

Enable accessibility features

For seniors, making Alexa easier to understand and respond to can prevent frustration.

Adjust the volume

Say “Alexa, volume [1-10]” or use the device's physical buttons.

Turn on captions (for devices with screens)

Say, “Alexa, turn on all captions” Or in the app: Settings > Accessibility > Captioning.

Turn on Follow Up Mode

This lets Alexa listen for a short time after responding, so your parent doesn’t have to repeat the wake word.

Say, “Alexa, turn on Follow Up Mode” Or in the app: Devices > [Device name] > Settings > Follow-Up Mode.

Set up communication and emergency features

Alexa can help your parents stay connected in an emergency. With Alexa Communication set up, they can call you or other family members using just their voice.

  1. In the app, tap More > Communicate.
  2. Verify your parents’ information and allow contact list access.
  3. To confirm it’s working, say “Alexa, call [Name].”

You can also enable Drop In for approved contacts so family members can check in quickly. For setup details, see how to use Alexa Drop In to check on family.

Alexa doesn’t typically dial 911 directly. However, Alexa Emergency Assist is a 24/7 subscription service that can connect your parents to trained agents who can contact emergency services if needed.

Create helpful routines and reminders

Start simple. Two to four routines are usually enough.

Medication reminders

Say, “Alexa, set a reminder for [medication] at [time]” Or in the app: More > Reminders > Add Reminder, then enter the name, time, and recurrence.

Daily routines

Say, “Alexa, enable […Routine]” Or in the app: tap More > Routines to create a morning or bedtime routine that can turn on lights, provide weather updates, or play music.

Reduce confusion and practice core commands

Too many features at once can be overwhelming. To keep things simple:

  • Turn off unwanted notifications
    • In the app: Settings > Notifications.
  • Disable voice purchasing to avoid accidental orders.
    • In the app: More > Settings > Account Settings > Voice Purchasing.
  • Practice a few basic commands with your parents daily.
    • “Alexa, call [Name].”
    • “Alexa, what’s the weather?”
  • Leave a printed cheat sheet nearby for easy reference.
