You recently bought a Google Nest thermostat, and you're pretty pumped. Now you can control your heating and air conditioning directly from your phone. Even better, its energy-saving settings should save you money on electricity costs. There's only one problem—you're not sure how the Nest thermostat setup works.
Asurion Experts help you get the most from your home devices. Whether you need to troubleshoot common smart thermostat problems or connect your Nest thermostat to Alexa™, we have a solution. Use our installation guide for the Nest thermostat for an easy setup process.
How long does it take to install a Nest thermostat?
Most installations take 30 to 60 minutes. If your wiring is straightforward and compatible, it can be even faster.
Connect your thermostat to the app
The Google Home app is your partner throughout the installation process. Before taking any other steps, download it to your smartphone through the Google Play™ or Apple App Store®.
Once downloaded, open the Google Home app to add your device. Take these steps:
- Tap Add > Device > Scan QR Code.
- Scan the QR code on the back of the thermostat using your phone or enter it manually.
- Select a home and wait for the app to locate your device. If it can't locate it, select the Nest thermostat from the list of available options.
- Follow the prompts to initiate the guided installation.
Adding a Nest thermostat installed by a professional
Did a technician already install your thermostat? That definitely eases some of the workload, but you'll still need to add the device to the Google Home app. That way, you can control your thermostat settings from your phone. Take these steps to set it up:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Add > Device > Scan QR Code.
- Tap Already installed once you reach the "Get started" screen.
- Select a Wi-Fi network to connect to.
- Tap the location of the thermostat.
- Follow the prompts to configure your thermostat settings. You can skip this step if you'd prefer to set them up later.

Get your thermostat online
After completing the installation, the Google Home app will search for your thermostat. When the app locates the device, it asks you to choose a language. Tap your preferred language, then follow the prompts. It will ask you basic questions about your HVAC system type and features.
Next, you'll connect the thermostat to your home's Wi-Fi network. Select the appropriate network from the available options and enter the password. After connecting, the Google Home app will start the thermostat settings configuration process.
What to do if you can't connect your device
If the Google Nest thermostat won't connect to Wi-Fi, there are a couple of troubleshooting steps you can try.
- Verify the Wi-Fi password: Confirm you're using the correct Wi-Fi credentials for your network.
- Try a different router setting: Change from the 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz network (or vice versa) if you're using a dual-band router.
- Move the router: Relocate the router closer to the Google Nest for a stronger connection.
Avoid connecting the Google Nest with a mobile hotspot or public Wi-Fi network. These network types generally aren't secure. It's best to stick with a private network that you control.
Finish your system configuration and testing
Run a quick system test on the Google Nest thermostat after finishing the installation. The app includes options to test each component of your HVAC system, including heat, air conditioning, and the fan. Testing each one can alert you to any potential issues. To get started, take these steps:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Devices.
- Tap your thermostat.
- Tap Mode. Tap the component you'd like to test (Cool, Heat, or Fan).
- If you're testing the heat, turn up the target temperature until it turns orange. To test the air conditioning, lower the target temperature until it turns blue.
- Wait five minutes, then check your vents or radiator to verify the temperature change.
You can adjust the temperature settings using the slide bar on the right side of the thermostat. Additional controls and presets are available through the Google Home app.
Factory reset if you need to start again
If you made a mistake during the Nest thermostat app setup process (don't worry, it happens), you can easily reset the device to its factory settings. This erases all your personal information, allowing you to set it up from scratch.
To perform a factory reset, take these steps:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Settings > Factory reset.
- Wait for a few minutes for the process to complete.
After the factory reset completes, you'll need to re-add the device to your Google Home app to set it up and create your new settings.

FAQ
Do I need to turn off the power before installing a Nest thermostat?
Yes. Always turn off the circuit breaker for your HVAC system before touching any wires. It’s a quick step that prevents bigger problems.
Why won’t my Nest thermostat connect to Wi-Fi?
Double-check your Wi-Fi password and make sure you’re using a 2.4 GHz network. Being too far from the router can also cause connection issues.
Does Nest thermostat work without Wi-Fi?
Yes, it will still control your heating and cooling manually. However, you won’t be able to use app controls, remote access, or smart features until it’s reconnected.
Can I install a Nest thermostat myself?
In many homes, yes. Nest thermostats are designed for DIY installation. Just confirm compatibility with your HVAC system before you start.
