💡 Need to know

  • Quick Start is the fastest option. Keep your old iPad nearby to transfer apps, settings, and data automatically.
  • Have your Apple Account ready. You’ll need it to restore backups and download apps.
  • Wi-Fi is required. Setup and data transfers won’t complete without a stable connection.

When you get an iPad®, whether it’s brand-new or just new to you, you have to complete a few steps to get it ready to use. The good news is that the process is generally quick and straightforward.

At Asurion, we have seen it all when it comes to tech, so we can walk you through everything you need to know about your devices, from fixing a broken iPad to replacing a tablet. Here’s our guide on how to set up a new iPad with these simple steps.

How long does it take to set up a new iPad?

Most setups take 10–20 minutes. Restoring from an iCloud backup can take longer depending on your Wi-Fi speed and how much data you’re transferring.

Use Quick Start for a seamless transfer

Quick Start makes it easy to set up your new iPad with all the apps, data, and settings from your existing iPad. When the process is complete, your new iPad will have everything you’re used to for a seamless transition.

Follow these steps on how to set up an iPad from an old iPad using Quick Start:

  1. Make sure your current iPad has Bluetooth turned on and is connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. Complete an iCloud® backup for your current iPad if possible.
  3. Turn on your new iPad and place it near your old iPad.
  4. When an alert appears on your old iPad, press Continue.
  5. Use your old iPad’s camera to scan the pairing animation on your new iPad.
  6. If the new iPad is for you, select Set Up for Me.
  7. On your new iPad, enter your old iPad’s passcode.

Configure your settings manually

If you don’t have an old iPad you want to use to set up your new iPad, don’t worry. Just follow these manual iPad setup steps:

  1. Turn on your new iPad.
  2. Select a Wi-Fi network and enter the password. Tap Join after you enter the password.
  3. You may see a page prompting you to install a software update. Select Update Now or Update Later.
  4. On the Appearance page, select how large you would like text and icons to show up on your iPad. Press Continue once you’ve made your selection.
  5. On the Quick Start page, select Set up Without Another Device.
  6. On the Data & Privacy page, select Continue.
  7. Select Set Up for Myself if the iPad is for you.
  8. Depending on the iPad model you purchased, you may be able to set up either Face ID® or Touch ID®. Press Continue when prompted to set them up.
  9. Create a six-digit iPad passcode. Alternatively, you can select Passcode Options and choose between a Custom Alphanumeric Code, a Custom Numeric Code, or a 4-Digit Numeric Code.

Sign in and restore your data

Next, sign in with your Apple Account (formerly called Apple ID). If you don’t already have one, create a new account.

If you’re using Quick Start and reach the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen, choose From iCloud Backup to use your most recent iCloud backup.

If you’re using manual setup, select Don’t Transfer Anything.

At the end of the process, your new iPad will restart. Once it powers back on, it should be ready for use. Keep in mind that your apps and data will continue to download in the background, so they might not be available immediately.

Finalize your iPad features and updates

There are additional settings you can adjust after the initial setup. Enable Siri®, set up Apple Pay®, and use Screen Time to limit how much time you spend on specific apps. Enabling automatic updates helps ensure your software stays up to date.

You can begin setup, but you’ll need Wi-Fi to restore backups, sign in with your Apple Account, and download apps.

What is Quick Start on iPad?

Quick Start is Apple’s built-in feature that transfers your apps, settings, and data from your old device to your new one automatically.

Why won’t my iPad restore from iCloud backup?

Check your Wi-Fi connection and confirm you’re signed in with the correct Apple Account. A slow or unstable network is the most common cause.
