See which apps are using the battery

Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage and review the list.

Look for an app using far more battery than expected. Video calls, gaming, streaming, editing software, browser tabs, and cloud-sync tools can all use a lot of power, but a supposedly idle program sitting near the top deserves attention.

Close what you don’t need and test another unplugged session. If the battery suddenly lasts longer, the battery itself may be fine—the workload changed.

Lower brightness and shorten screen time

The display is one of the laptop’s biggest power users. Turn the brightness down to a comfortable level and set the screen to turn off sooner when the laptop isn’t being used.

In Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts, shorten the battery-powered display and sleep times if they’re currently very long.

A backlit keyboard can use extra battery too. If you don’t need the lighting during the day, turn it down or off.

Switch to Best power efficiency

Open Settings > System > Power & battery, then change Power mode to Best power efficiency when you need longer unplugged time.

That setting reduces some performance to use less power. For email, documents, browsing, and other everyday tasks, the difference may be barely noticeable while the battery lasts longer.

Switch back to Balanced when you need more performance.

Close background apps and unplug extras

USB drives, external hard drives, phones, dongles, and other powered accessories draw energy from the laptop. Disconnect what you aren’t using.

Do the same thing with software. A browser with autoplaying tabs, game launcher checking for updates, cloud backup, or antivirus scan can drain the battery without looking especially dramatic on-screen.

Task Manager can help here too. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then check the apps using the most CPU.

Keep the HP laptop cool

Heat and battery life don’t get along very well. Keep the laptop on a hard surface so the vents stay clear. If the fan runs constantly or the laptop gets hot during basic tasks, fix the cooling issue rather than treating the short battery life as a completely separate problem.

Check the battery with HP Support Assistant

If the runtime has dropped sharply even after reducing power use, test the battery itself. In HP Support Assistant:

1. Open HP Support Assistant.
2. Select Battery.
3. Choose Run battery check.
4. Review the result.

HP Battery Check may report statuses such as Passed, Weak, Very Weak, Replace, or a failure with an ID number. A weak result means the battery is still functioning but has lost capacity through normal aging; a Replace or failure result is a much stronger case for hardware service.

Generate a Windows battery report

Windows can also compare what the battery was designed to hold with what it can hold now.

1. Right-click Start and open Terminal (Admin).
2. Type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
3. Open the battery-report.html file Windows creates.
4. Compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity.

If Full Charge Capacity is much lower than Design Capacity, the battery has lost some of its original capacity.

Don’t judge it on one percentage point. What matters is a meaningful drop combined with real-world symptoms like very short runtime or unexpected shutdowns.

Know when fast drain is more than a settings problem

Battery aging usually happens gradually. Pay closer attention if the laptop:

• Suddenly lasts far less time than it did recently.
• Shuts down while the battery indicator still shows charge.
• Only works reliably while plugged in.
• Gets unusually hot around the battery area.
• Shows an HP battery-health warning.
• Has a swollen or distorted case.
