You turn the page on your Kindle® and the entire display briefly flashes black and white. Or maybe the screen keeps blinking, leaving shadows of the previous page behind. It looks dramatic, but it doesn’t always mean the display is broken.

Normal Kindle screen flashing typically:

• Changes the full display from light to dark and back.
• Leaves the next page clear and readable.
• Occurs more often when Page Refresh is turned on.

Ghosting can also be normal in small amounts. You may see a faint trace of the previous page before the display refreshes again.

The behavior is more concerning when the Kindle flickers repeatedly without a page turn, flashes while sitting on the home screen, shows permanent lines, or leaves large sections unreadable.

Change the Page Refresh setting

Page Refresh tells the Kindle whether to fully refresh its E Ink display with every page turn. Turning it on may make the screen flash more frequently, but it can reduce ghosting. Turning it off usually creates smoother page turns, though faint traces of the previous page may occasionally remain.

Depending on the Kindle model and software version:

1. Tap near the top of the screen to open the toolbar.
2. Tap All Settings.
3. Open Home and Library or Reading Options.
4. Tap Reading Options if it appears.
5. Toggle Page Refresh on or off.
6. Open a book and turn several pages to compare the results.

Some Kindle software versions place Reading Options directly under All Settings. The exact menu may look a little different, but the Page Refresh setting should use the same name.

Try both options. A brief flash with Page Refresh on is expected; nonstop blinking is not the feature doing its job enthusiastically.

Restart your Kindle

If the screen suddenly started flickering or refreshing at odd times, restart the device before changing anything more complicated.

1. Press and hold the Power button.
2. Keep holding until the power menu appears or the screen goes blank.
3. Tap Restart if the option appears.

Remove the case, restart the Kindle, and test it without the cover. While it is off, gently wipe the screen with a clean, dry cloth made for electronic displays. Moisture, grime, or pressure around the edges can sometimes affect touch response, though they will not fix permanent display damage.

When Kindle screen flickering may mean damage

Screen damage usually looks different from an ordinary E Ink refresh. Watch for:
