Xbox mic not working? Here’s how to fix it

Try some quick fixes

Most of the time, a mic not working on Xbox has a simple solution that doesn't require much effort to resolve. 

Check connections

Confirm you have a stable connection between the headset and your Xbox. To pair an Xbox Wireless Headset, follow these steps:

1. Turn the headset and the Xbox on.
2. Press and hold the Power button until you hear a beeping tone.
3. Press the Pair button on the Xbox.
4. Wait for the power lights on the Xbox and headset to stop flashing.

If you're using a wired headset, verify you've plugged it into the audio jack on your controller.

Check mute settings

Look for a light at the end of the mic of your wireless headset. If it's unlit, you're on mute. Press the headset's mute button on the back of the mic to unmute your device.

You can control the mic settings for wired headsets using your controller. Press the Xbox button > Audio & music to access them.  

Restart the headset

Try restarting the wireless headset. Press the Power button on the left side and wait for it to turn off. Press the Power button again to turn it back on. 

Update firmware

Xbox occasionally releases updates to fix bugs and add new features. Make sure you have the latest firmware installed for your wireless headset.

1. Verify the headset is on and connected to the Xbox.
2. Press the Xbox button.
3. Select Profile & System > Settings > Devices & connections.
4. Select Accessories. Choose your headset from the listed options.
5. Select More actions > Update now.

If there is no option to update, you have the latest firmware.

Test the Xbox mic with another controller or console

If you have another controller or console that's compatible with your Xbox headset, try hooking it up to that device. If your mic works with the device, there may be an issue with the console or controller you normally use. 

Apply a hard reset

A hard reset clears out temporary bugs or system conflicts that interfere with mic performance. To perform one, you need a USB-C cable that's compatible with your headset.

1. Plug the USB-C into the headset. 
2. Move close to the Xbox console or a power outlet with a USB-C input.
3. Press the Power and Mute button on the headset simultaneously.
4. Immediately plug the other end of the USB-C cable into the console or power outlet.
5. Wait for the headset to turn off.
6. Restart the headset. 

Check privacy and safety settings

Some privacy settings automatically disable chat features. To re-enable them, take these steps:

1. Press the Xbox button.
2. Select Profile & system > Settings > Account.
3. Select Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize.
4. Verify the Communicate with voice and text setting is on. 

If someone manages your Xbox account (like a parent), ask them to check your privacy settings. 

1. Log in to the manager's account.
2. Press the Xbox button.
3. Select Profile & system > Settings > Account.
4. Select Family settings > Manage family members. Select the member's account from the options.
5. Select Xbox privacy > View details & customize. 
6. Verify the Communicate with voice and text setting is on. 

Reset audio settings using the advanced options

Review your current audio settings to confirm they match your preferences. To fix Xbox audio issues, follow these steps: 

1. Turn on the wireless headset and Xbox console.
2. Press the Xbox button.
3. Select Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections.
4. Select Accessories > Configure.

Make sure you don't have the volume disabled and that Auto-mute is set to Low or Off.
