Why your phone speaker sounds muffled and how to fix it

Older gentleman with beard smiling amiably on a phone call

⚡ Fast fix

  • Turn up your phone’s volume.
  • Disconnect any Bluetooth® devices.
  • Remove your phone case if it blocks the speaker.
  • Clean out any lint or debris in the speaker grille.

When you’re trying to play audio on your phone, the last thing you want is quiet, muffled sounds you can barely even hear. Whether the muffled audio happens while you’re making calls, playing videos, or listening to music, it’s always frustrating. You’ll want to fix it as quickly as possible.

Asurion Experts have seen it all—and can fix it all. In helping millions of customers with their devices, we’ve learned that speaker issues are usually caused by dust, water exposure, or simple software settings rather than permanent damage. So, don’t get rid of your phone just yet. Follow the steps in this guide on how to fix a muffled phone speaker.

Clean your phone speaker to remove dust and debris

Just like wax buildup in your ears can make hearing difficult, dust and debris buildup in your phone speaker can make sounds muffled.

If you can’t get a clear sound out of your phone, start by inspecting the speaker grille. Look for excess pocket lint, dust, and debris in the grille that can block sound and make audio seem quieter or distorted.

You need to get rid of this debris if it’s there, but don’t just use the first tool you can find. Inserting something pointy, like a safety pin or pencil tip, can permanently damage the speaker, which is the opposite of what you want. Instead, use a soft-bristled brush, a microfiber cloth, or compressed air to gently clean dust out of the phone speaker. Get as much out as you can, so there’s nothing blocking sound from your phone.

If you’re having iPhone® microphone problems or your Samsung® microphone is not working, check for debris. Clearing out any buildup may help.

How to fix a phone speaker that sounds muffled after water exposure

Water exposure is one of the most common reasons a phone speaker sounds distorted. When water gets into your phone, some of it may not drip or evaporate out. That trapped moisture can block sound and distort audio quality.

Look for common signs of water-related speaker issues, such as:

  • Popping sounds
  • Low volume
  • Static
  • Volume imbalance between left and right
  • Moisture or fog in the speaker grille
  • Muffled or distorted audio

If your phone speaker sounds muffled after water exposure, try to air-dry it as much as possible. Playing water ejection sounds—available on YouTube or in your iPhone Settings—may also help force the water out of the speaker.

Avoid charging your phone until it's fully dry, since introducing the charger can trap water and cause additional problems.

Check your audio settings and software connections

Sometimes, your phone settings or software is causing muffled audio. Try these fixes:

  • Disable Bluetooth to ensure your audio’s not redirecting to another speaker.
  • Update your phone and restart it to resolve software bugs.
  • Adjust your audio balance in Settings.
  • Check Settings and disconnect unused wireless devices that may still route audio away from the speaker.

Signs your phone speaker may need repair

Your speaker may not be fixable at home. Depending on your iPhone or Samsung Galaxy speaker issues symptoms, you may need to go to a professional for repair.

Signs of internal hardware damage, instead of temporary blockage or settings problems, include:

  • Crackling audio
  • Very low volume after cleaning
  • Distorted sound during all media playback
  • No sound at all

If you try all the other fixes but your speaker issues remain, the next step is to consult professional tech help.

FAQ

Can you clean a phone speaker with a toothpick?

No. Toothpicks and other sharp objects can damage the speaker mesh or push debris deeper into the speaker.

Why does my phone speaker sound muffled after a software update?

Sometimes an update changes audio settings, Bluetooth routing, or other sound preferences. A restart and quick settings check usually fixes it.
