Selling your Fire tablet? How to reset it safely
💡 Need to know
- Back up before wiping—Photos, files, app data, and game progress don’t all save the same way.
- Remove the microSD card—Don’t accidentally sell personal storage with the tablet.
- Factory reset from Settings—It removes personal data, apps, settings, and account registration.
- Need help before the handoff? Get 24/7 expert support for the tech you rely on.
A Fire tablet can collect a lot over the years—photos, downloads, kids’ profiles, games, documents, and more saved passwords than anyone remembers entering. Before it goes to a new owner, all of that needs to stay with the old one.
Asurion Experts help people back up and reset Amazon® Fire tablets every day. The safest order is backup first, removable storage second, factory reset last. It’s a few extra minutes now for a much cleaner handoff later.
Make sure the backup has actually happened
Fire tablets include a built-in backup option for supported device data.
Swipe down and open Settings > Device Options > Backup & Restore, then make sure backup is turned on. When supported, the tablet backs up while connected to Wi-Fi and power.
That doesn’t mean every byte on the tablet is automatically protected. Account passwords, some app settings, certain game progress, sideloaded content, and personal files may need their own backup. Photos and documents worth keeping should exist somewhere else before the tablet is erased.
Our guide to backing up data on an Amazon Fire tablet walks through the cloud setting and what to think about beyond it.
Pull out the microSD card
If the Fire tablet has a microSD card, remove it before selling the device unless the card is intentionally part of the deal and has been wiped separately.
A factory reset of the tablet should not be treated as a guarantee that every file on removable storage is gone. The simplest privacy move is to keep the card.
Also check the Downloads folder, Files or Docs app, browser downloads, photos, videos, and anything transferred manually from another computer or phone.
Factory reset the Fire tablet
Once everything important is backed up and removable storage is out:
- Swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Device Options or Device & Software, depending on the Fire OS version.
- Tap Reset to Factory Defaults.
- Tap Reset to confirm.
- Enter the PIN or password if prompted.
- Let the tablet finish wiping and restarting.
A factory reset erases personal data, downloaded apps and content, settings, and account registration. The tablet may take several minutes to finish, so leave it plugged in if the battery is low and let the process run.
Stop when the setup screen appears
When the tablet restarts and shows the welcome or initial setup screen, that’s the finish line.
Don’t reconnect it to Wi-Fi and sign back into the old Amazon account to “make sure everything works.” The tablet already made the point by reaching setup. Signing in again simply puts personal information back where it was just removed.
If the device is being sold locally, the buyer can power it on and see that setup is ready without needing access to the seller’s account.
Check the Amazon account from another device
The Fire tablet should be deregistered when the factory reset completes, but it’s still smart to check Amazon’s registered devices afterward.
If the old Fire tablet remains listed where it shouldn’t, deregister it from the account. The Amazon account itself, purchase history, and cloud purchases are not deleted by resetting one tablet.
That means books, movies, and other eligible Amazon purchases stay with the seller’s account rather than going home with the tablet.

FAQ
Should I remove my Amazon account before selling a Fire tablet?
A factory reset removes the tablet’s account registration. Afterward, check the registered-device list and deregister it there too if it still appears.
Does factory resetting a Fire tablet delete everything?
It erases personal data, downloaded content, apps, settings, and account registration stored on the tablet. Back up anything important first.
What happens to Amazon purchases after a Fire tablet reset?
Eligible purchases remain tied to the Amazon account and can generally be downloaded again on another compatible device.
Should I remove the SD card before selling a Fire tablet?
Yes, unless it’s intentionally included and has been wiped separately. Keeping the card is the easiest way to avoid passing along personal files.
How do I know the Fire tablet reset worked?
It should restart to the first-time setup screen instead of opening the previous user’s profile and home screen.
