How to reset your LG microwave when the touchpad stops working
It's lunchtime, so you pop a frozen meal into your LG® microwave for a quick bite to eat. But something's wrong —the touchpad doesn't respond when you press its buttons. Is it a power issue or something more serious, like a damaged part?
Asurion Experts keep your kitchen appliances running safely. Whether we're advising on the best smart appliances for your home or explaining how renters' insurance applies to electronic damage, you can count on us for a straight answer. Here's how to reset an LG microwave oven that isn't working properly.
Safety precautions before resetting
Before attempting to reset your microwave, do a few quick safety checks. Unplug the microwave from its power source and inspect the cord for any visible damage, such as fraying or cuts to its plastic covering. Torn cords are a fire hazard that indicates it's time to replace your microwave.
Also, inspect the wall outlet or power source for signs of damage. Burn marks, sparks, and a burning odor are signs of a problem better left to a qualified electrician. If you notice them, cut off power to the area from the circuit breaker.
Check the LG microwave's user manual for model-specific guidance on the touchpad. The user manual may contain tips to reset your microwave or address specific problems with the touch interface.
Try these LG microwave troubleshooting methods in order
If your LG microwave isn't working and there doesn't appear to be any damage to its plug or power source, try these quick fixes.
1. Hard reset
Unplug the microwave from its power source and wait up to three minutes. This allows the microwave time to release its existing charge and clears the wiring for fresh power. Plug the microwave back inand set its clock to the correct time. Try warming up a glass of water for 30 seconds to see if the issue continues.
2. Check the control lock
You should hear a beep or chime after pressing a button on the microwave. If you don't hear one, disable the control lock function. Press and hold the Clear/Off button for three seconds.
Some LG microwaves use a different method to enable or disable the control lock function. Review your user manual if the appliance doesn't respond to the Clear/Off button.
3. Clean the touchpad
A build-up of grease and grime may prevent the control panel from recognizing your touch. Gently wipe it clean using a soft cloth and liquid dish soap. A soft toothbrush can help you reach any dirt stuck in the crevices.
Make sure to disconnect the microwave before cleaning the touchpad area.
4. Examine the door
Open the microwave and inspect the door for food stains and buildup, especially around the latch. Use a soft cloth and liquid dish soap to clean off any debris. Verify the microwave latches are working properly by opening and closing the microwave two to three times.
Preventing future touchpad malfunctions
A non-working LG microwave touchpad stops you from using your appliance. While it's not always avoidable, there are a few things you can do to keep your microwave humming smoothly.
Lightly press the microwave buttons
Appliance touchpads are very sensitive to pressure. Applying too much force can damage the intricate sensors underneath the buttons. Use a gentle touch when navigating the touchpad.
Keep young children away from the appliance
Toddlers and young kids won't understand how to use kitchen appliances safely. Store your microwave outside their reach and turn on the control lock when you're not using it. On most LG microwaves, you can enable and disable the control lock by pressing the Start/Off button for three seconds.
Implement a regular microwave cleaning schedule
LG recommends cleaning the microwave once weekly, especially for frequent users. To clean the interior, pull out the turntable and its round support ring. Wash both items with warm water and dish soap and allow them to dry. Wipe the interior of the microwave using a soft cloth and gentle soap.
Keep the exterior of the microwave clean, too. First, unplug the device from its power source. Use a cloth dipped in dish soap to wipe away dirt or grime from the touchpad. You can apply glass cleaner to the microwave screen to remove fingerprints and splatters.
Pay attention to signs of damage
Microwaves are susceptible to wear and tear from heavy use. If you notice damage to the appliance door, latch, or hinge, it may require repair. An unresponsive touchpad that doesn't respond to simple fixes may indicate bad sensors or a control board issue.
Most microwaves last up to 10 years. Consider replacing your appliance once it meets the 10-year threshold.
